Following today’s 1-1 draw away at Sunderland in League One, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what three things they learned from the match.

Here’s what sedgleyimp said:

1. There’s fight and grit in the team. The last seven days have been difficult (to put it mildly) with poor results and further injuries blighting what has been, and still is, an excellent season. Black clouds hung low and many expected a heavy defeat today, even to the point of trying to make some money on a defeat to ‘soften’ the blow. A goal conceded just before half time would surely see shoulders and heads drop. But instead, we witnessed a team fighting for each other and wanting to get back into a game and reignite that opportunity of promotion. The second half performance was full of fight and spirit and a well-deserved point was earned. With a little more fortune a win would have been ours. So although we haven’t won now for some four games, the team’s spirit lingers and that just might get us over the line for the remaining games.

2. Preparation is important. It perhaps didn’t need a huge amount of planning to see that the key to Sunderland’s recent form has been the link-up play between McGeady and Wyke and we set up today to frustrate that. It worked. Wyke had barely a touch of the ball and was fortunate to not get a second yellow this afternoon. McGeady was kept at bay by Poole. The same can be said for Gooch on the other side with Bramall not giving him many opportunities. The quality of their crossing is clear but we set up well today and dealt with it, bar on one occasion, very well.

3. It’s going to be a roller-coaster end to the season. I have no idea where we will be placed in this division come the 8th of May. We could just as easily finish top as finish 10th. That can be said for every other team in the mix. No one team is running away with it. Everyone will drop points. Makes it far more interesting than the Premiership.
