“It has to be our FA Cup run. Especially watching the Ipswich Town replay in my local and going to Burnley.”

|

We don’t know when we will be watching live football, so talking about memories, such as the Ipswich Town FA Cup replay and the win at Burnley, is one thing we will we have to do what we can to keep things ticking over on 100% Imps and the Front Page. We’ll be doing Q&As with our members and anyone else that would like to take part over the next few weeks. So, if you’d like to put yourself on the spot, please email lincoln@vitalfootball.co.uk.

So, next in the hot heat is Paul Smith, better known as SalfordImp.

You and EB (The Electric Banana). What’s the story?

A long story, I will let EB answer that one.

What was your first City game?

To be honest I cannot really remember, although it was due 76/77 season.

Who would you choose as City’s worse ever manager and why?

A no brainer, Sutton. He may have been a good footballer but that does not automatically mean he could be a good manager. So, to answer the why bit, he can’t manage for toffee.

The weirdest ground you’ve been to?

That has to be Forest Green Rovers aka PGR, never a real football ground for away supporters. How can it be when the away bar is a small tent in a muddy field, the owner is autocratic in saying what other people cannot eat or drink when they are paying customers.

Were you at Haig Avenue in 1975?

No, but at least I know its Haig Avenue and not Haigh Avenue.

What’s your favourite Lincoln pub?

Presently it is the Treaty for a pre-match and post-match pint when I can.

Were you on that Wadsley Bridge special back in March 1977?

No, I was not. I was probably busy completing my 4-star badge (=Duke Of Edinburgh’s Gold) at the time.

How many “Jimmys” do you have?

Just been around the house and counted. I presently have 8 in and around the house. For those who do not know what a ‘Jimmy’ is. It’s the nickname for the Royal Corps of Signals badge. It is the Corps I served in whilst in the Army from 1978 to 1992.

By the way, this year is the Corps 100th Anniversary this year, the exact date it was formed was on the 28th June when it was Winston Churchill who gave the authorisation.

Due to the Covid-19, it has impacted a lot of celebrations that were planned. So one thing that has emerged is that all us Veterans and serving are now flying the flag outside our houses. Presently there are a few hundred that have been mapped in the UK and around the world. A photo of mine is below;

If it were up to you, would you have any of our recent ex-players back in the current Imps team? If yes, which and why?

I am not really one for having any players back as it’s the current team that matters, but I will answer this one. I will go for the big man Matt Rhead because he was not only good but showed a passion for the club.

What’s your best Chris Ashton anecdote?

A Chris Aston anecdote, don’t’ think there is any, maybe because he was too busy eating all the time to say any.

Who was crazier, Andy Gorton or Barry Richardson?

Sorry, cannot answer that as they were way before my time.

When did you first start watching the Imps and why? For example, who introduced you?

See answer to question 2. But attended my first games with my school mates, Rich Murfett and Doug Burt. Wonder where those two guys are now as I lost contact them with years ago.

What are your fondest memories supporting the Imps through the years?

A lot. It has to be our FA Cup run. Especially watching the Ipswich Town replay in my local and going to Burnley. Also, have to include going to Wembley.

Do you enjoy being an Imp in exile?

A simple answer ‘No’.

Do you wish you were located nearer to Sincil Bank?

Of course, yes, and if future planning is correct, I hope to be.

What are your music tastes and what do you listen to in the car pre-match when travelling over for games?

Generally, like the older music in terms of decades, 60’s to ’80s, also like Folk music especially Harvey Andrews.
