Following last night’s 2-1 win at home against Wigan Athletic in League One, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what three things they learned from the match.

1. No team in this league will just lay back and let you beat them. Wigan came into this game bottom of the league and having just lost their top scorer to the Indian Premier League. But they gave us a game tonight. Yes, they were limited in attack but they came with a clear game plan to frustrate our style of play and try and grab a goal on a counter-attack and they did exactly that. Up to out equaliser you could say that the better team on the night were in the lead. This is how many of our remaining games will continue to play out this season especially at home. Teams will set up to stop us from playing. We have to find ways of breaking them down. We as supporters need to accept that as well.

2. This team does have the bottle to keep going. Last season on the whole if we conceded the first goal you knew we would end up losing the game. Tonight you saw that they had the kick up the arse they needed coupled with the ability to get back into the game. If we are to be serious contenders for promotion, that is the kind of quality that will get us the results we will need.

3. Wigan are no Bolton. Last season Bolton graced League 1 with their presence in similar circumstances to that which Wigan now face. Bolton’s demise was largely down to their own failings. Wigan’s seem to have been influenced by outside influences and shenanigans and I have a lot of sympathy for the position that the team, management and fans are now in. Many gloated over what happened to Bolton. I don’t think any have such views on Wigan and I hope they overcome their problems and make a real go of surviving as a club and maybe avoid relegation.
