Lincoln City 2-1 Wigan Athletic: Match Stats, Highlights & Views From The Forum

|

Views from Merthyr Imp following last night’s 2-1 win at home against Wigan Athletic in League One: “We’ll play better than that and lose (see last Saturday).

You couldn’t argue too much at the time with those on here who said after Wigan scored that we would lose, but with plenty of time to go, you got the feeling that we just needed a bit of a lucky break (like their goal was) or a moment of magic to get back in the game. And that’s what happened. I’m sure if Steve Thompson had been commentating he would have said: “for me, this is a free-kick for a left-footer” – and of course it was, which made Grant’s effort so special. Would like to see it from behind the goal, but he can’t have scored a better one.

In the end, what with Walsh’s effort cleared off the line, and a late effort from Scully on the left that the keeper palmed away from under the bar, we were well worth at least the two goals.

The worrying thing was the number of poor final balls, especially in the first half – including from Grant of all people, and some disappointing performances over the 90 minutes from the likes of Johnson and Scully.

Others probably won’t agree but over the 90 minutes I rated Gotts the best player – he seems to be growing into that position, although again he wasn’t really tested defensively. Montsma by his standards I thought had a fairly average game, in fact I thought Jackson was the best centre back for us tonight.

Second, to Gotts, I thought Hopper was our best player overall, didn’t do much wrong and scored the winning goal.”

More views from the Match Thread:

imps_joe: “Another 3 points! We made it difficult for ourselves and looked a bit lost going forward until Wigan scored. Seemed to give us more urgency and purpose. Just about deserved the win in the end.”

hulloutpost: “Character Test – Passed.

More Than 2 Points Per Game – Yes.

Lesson To Be Learned – We have to make things happen ourselves, we absolutely cannot be passive. Better teams than Wigan will make that very difficult.

A very, very valuable experience with a positive outcome for a young team at this stage of their development.”

Luke Imp: “Our ability to stay in games when we’re not playing well is quite impressive. I think we’re seeing inconsistency within games more than we’re seeing inconsistencies from game to game so that becomes more important.

I know it coaching in terms of organisation but it’s also a mentality thing from the players. We might not have the power in the side of previous seasons but we still seem to have that bit of steel in us, which you don’t always get in ‘footballing’ sides. We’ve got a good balance.”
