Following yesterday’s 2-1 defeat at home against Bristol Rovers in League One, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what three things they learned from the match.

Here’s what sedgleyimp said:

1. After 45 seasons I should know better. It’s the expectation that gets you as an Imp. We have good wins and you then start to get ahead of yourself and start thinking about the away trips to Derby and Sheffield Wednesday next season and hope that we are allowed in. In those 45 seasons, there have been some excellent highs and there have been a very large number of lows. The only consistent has been that you come to expect a positive result, when in all honesty you don’t really deserve it. When the season’s fixtures were announced I thought we’d be doing pretty well to have managed 5 points up to and including the Blackpool game. So what does the team manage? Only four wins on the bounce and yet again I find myself dreaming of possibilities. Every time as an Imp you just know that there will be that game which brings you back down to earth. I really should look at history and know not to get ahead of things.

2. There are some smart teams in this league. Rovers arguably out Lincolned us today. They played pretty much as we had in previous matches and came out deservedly on top. I believe that this was the league match where we had the most possession so far yet they played to their strengths and matched us. Our great start will have made other clubs pay that little bit more attention to us and how to nullify our play. It will be interesting to see how we find the keys to unlock such problems as we go forward.

3. Last season it was our home form which kept us out of the relegation spots. This season I think it may well be our away form which will keep our heads swimming pretty high in the table. We are a counter-attacking team and are better when the opposition goes for it. The wins against Oxford and Charlton were matches against teams who came for three points. Rovers would have settled for one and put their mass banks of defenders in the way for the majority of the game. We will have a number of teams doing this from here on in at our home games and without the 9,000+ supporters urging the team on, it just might be our home matches against the ‘minnows’ of this league will be a frustrating watch.
