Following the 2-1 defeat away at Southampton in the Round of 16 of the League Cup, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what three things they learnt from the match.

Here’s what sedgleyimp said:

1. It is possible to enjoy a game even if you lose. A combination of a lack of expectation and pressure on the players coupled with a terrific atmosphere and a chance to visit a new nice ground plus the dedicated performance of the players showed that sometimes you can thoroughly enjoy the experience of being at a game of football supporting your team and even when the result goes against your team you are on your feet at the end applauding the team off the pitch knowing that it was money very well spent.

2. Is there that much difference in the quality of players at our level and the bottom half of the Premier League? On the evidence of this game no there isn’t. Okay, this is one game taken in isolation playing against a team who, due to the World Cup, haven’t had a competitive game for five weeks so they may have been a little ring rusty, but overall we stood toe to toe with a team full of players with good reputations and earning in a week what our team earns in a month. So it gets you thinking about how we could survive and thrive in The Championship should we manage to get there. When we so nearly achieved that aim a couple of seasons ago there was talk of how it would be great to have a single season in that higher division. Well just perhaps we can look to achieve that bit more. Might be a big ask for this season but should we ever get higher, let’s not assume it will be for just the one jolly season.

3. Should we ever decide to leave Sincil Bank and build that new stadium spoken about for many a year we could do far worse than look at a (slightly) smaller version of St Mary’s. Decent stadium designed so that wherever you sit you get a good view.
