Jorge Grant, Lewis Montsma; they have emerged as stars this season. Anthony Scully and Tayo Edun are two young players that seemingly go from strength to strength as the season progresses and you can easily imagine they will be key players to the club over the next couple of seasons. A successful club needs top players for their level and an obvious route map for those that are going to grow and take the place of departing favourites or top loan signings.

However to be a successful club the whole squad needs to be operating in harmony. It’s no good if there are a core of players doing the business to only find there are the likes of Ben Hutchinson and Sean Newton moping around in the background, ready to exert their negativity at the first sign of a setback or if they aren’t the centre of attention.

The National League promotion squad had it’s star performers – Rhead, Raggett, Arnold and so on. There were no Hutchinsons lurking in that side. What they did have was a Jack Muldoon. A young man who overcame his own personal battle with diabetes to become a professional footballer. Somebody whose tireless enthusiasm and attitude were a vital component, the glue that held the big parts together.

Whenever there was fatigue, injury, an overload of games there was Jack to step forward. He didn’t always turn a game, sometimes (not often) he huffed and puffed, BUT he never let the side down and there were several memorable contributions during that season. He did the hard yards for others, brought them respite.

So what has this got to do with Remy Howarth signing a new contract you may ask but it’s obvious really isn’t it? Danny Cowley had Jack, Michael Appleton has Remy.

Remy’s journey back from being discarded by the professional game is well documented as is his indomitable spirit, attitude and character likewise.

A successful club will play nearly 60 games in a season. There is a lot of scope for burn out and injury there. Very few players are going to play most of those matches; in a small squad that is exacerbated.

We have seen Remy starting a few cup games, coming on as a substitute on other occasions. However it’s not enough to simply have a good attitude, peripheral players have to contribute as well. So does Remy tick that box? I would say he does. There’s been a couple of goals and assists and whilst he may run up the occasional blind alley or make the wrong decision it is worth remembering we still have a young player that is reasonably two-footed and can play in a number of midfield or forward positions.

That versatility. youthfulness, allied to a fantastic attitude both on and off the pitch, potential to improve whilst not breaking the bank, are the small percentages that go towards building a team that is greater than the sum of it’s parts.

Not everyone can be the Jorge Grant of the team but that doesn’t mean others should have their role diminished or dismissed. Congratulations on your contract extension Remy; it is well deserved.
