Lincoln and Portsmouth meet for only the twentieth time in league football on Tuesday evening, and for only the twenty-second time in all. Portsmouth dominate past exchanges, with eleven wins to Lincoln’s five. Two of those wins came in the FA Cup third round, both at Fratton Park, and both finished 4-0 to the hosts (in 1939 and 1952). Indeed, Portsmouth went on to win the trophy in 1939, due in part to having a home draw in every round. Pompey famously kept the cup for seven years after the intervention of the Second World War, breaking the record held by Sheffield United during the First World War. Not a lot of people know that, as someone once said.
