Three Things The Imps Need To Do To Win Versus Portsmouth

|

Ahead of Tuesday night’s match away at Portsmouth in League One, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what three things they think The Imps need to do to pick up all three points.

You can discuss what has been said in this article HERE, as well as many other topics on our 100% Imps forum! We have also published a Lincoln City v Portsmouth Quiz, which can be found just below the first three things. Every page view helps raise money for Lincoln City Football Club!

Here’s what Chimpimp said:

1. Field a recognised back four. In the match at Sincil Bank earlier in the season, Lincoln had TJ Eyoma at centre half with Roughan and Gotts as fullbacks. They were overpowered that night but there were reasons.

2. Don’t give Portsmouth too much respect. The result earlier in the season was not a real reflection of the respective strengths of the teams this season. The League table is. Portsmouth are one of the best sides in the league but so are Lincoln.

3. See a performance from Jorge Grant that you would expect from a player with many admirers. Grant has more ability than possibly any other City player. When Lincoln get on top he can pull the strings and create the chances. In games where Lincoln are struggling such as the first Pompey match, he is often anonymous. Stop Grant, stop Lincoln perhaps. Portsmouth will be trying to do that, the response from Grant will probably decide the outcome.

Which Lincoln City manager also managed Portsmouth?

And here’s what Chesterimp said:

1. Experience – as Chimpimp says above, we had an inexperienced back 4 in the home game. Same 4 as played yesterday will be much more robust. Portsmouth’s game plan includes ****housery, bullying the opposition and the ref to get the game run on their terms, we need to stand up to them. Respect their football, don’t respect all the other stuff.

2. A quick start. Posh and on Saturday we were slow out of the blocks. Pompey scored early at SB and after Saturday’s result will look to get on the front foot. Let’s start quick, hit the passes from the off, an early goal would be invaluable.

3. Bridcutt. His experience will be essential in coping with Pompey’s approach. But he needs to watch the fouls. An early yellow and Pompey will be looking for the second with every tackle, maximising its impact and in the ref’s face. A foul count as against Posh and he won’t last 90 minutes, but will be our key player if he does see the game out.
