Lincoln and Plymouth first met in the FA Cup first round on 10 January 1914, when the Second Division Imps fell 4-1 to their Southern League opponents. The attendance of 18,260 was a clear indication of Plymouth’s potential, and they finally appeared in the Football League in 1920 with the formation of the new Third Division. City gained revenge for that FA Cup giant-killing when they first met on League business in 1932-33, with City winning both matches to nil. Overall, Lincoln have a slight advantage with 17 wins to Plymouth’s 15. Oddly, Jorge Grant’s penalty in October was City’s first goal against Plymouth for almost twenty years, with Lincoln having scored in just four of their last twelve games against the Pilgrims.

Players to have appeared for both clubs during the last 30 years include Mark Smith, Dave Regis, Richard Logan, Bruce Grobbelaar, Guy Branston, Richard Flash, Martin Gritton, Terry Fleming, Peter Gilbert, Anthony Pulis, Luke Daley, Hamza Bencherif, Nathan Blissett and Alex Palmer.
