Following Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at home against Ipswich Town in League One, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what three things they learned from the match.

Here’s what sedgleyimp said:

1. This is a very tough league this season and when Michael Appleton discusses expectations he is talking from a knowledgeable viewpoint. Ipswich came into Saturday’s game in poor form and in the bottom four. At times in the first half, they played in a manner which showed that they are better than that. In the second half, they used their experience to see the game out, using a number of tried and tested ways to slow the game down. If you are 1-0 up, that’s how you play to ensure that you get the 3 points come full time. Not pretty but effective. We will be facing these kind of matches week in week out until the end of April and our still relatively young and evolving squad will need to adapt to this.

2. Small margins define your whole season. Saturday’s result ultimately came down to two incidents, both of which went against us. Both have been discussed pretty heavily on Vital Imps since the game, and if both decisions had gone the other way we would have been happily reviewing a 1-0 win rather than the loss. Such is the way of football. Yet from that discussion, you realise that we are not that far off. You consider matches already played and bar the Oxford loss any match lost could have gone our way and we’d be much higher in the league. Keep the faith as the wins will come.

3. The importance of stopping a quality cross. Ipswich’s goal came from an excellent cross, but one which their player was given far too much time to plan and execute it. Whenever we were in similar positions to do the same, Ipswich closed our players down preventing such quality. If we are to achieve that much-vaunted clean sheet we will need to ensure that all players are doing their jobs to prevent these crosses. They are very difficult for central defenders who are often on the back foot, under those circumstances, to deal with. Stop them at the source.
