Lincoln City 0-1 Doncaster Rovers: Match Stats & Views From The Forum

|

Views from Rasenimp following Tuesday night’s 1-0 defeat at home against Doncaster Rovers in League One: “Still generally really annoyed about that and not sure where the problem exactly lies. I think Maguire has to bury that chance in the first half and can’t really blame Appleton for the first half performance where we created enough to have the game over and done with.

The second half is a different kettle of fish entirely. We huffed and puffed a bit but largely played aimless balls forward and patterns of play that resulted in crosses to nobody, with no one attacking the ball. The Sanders off for Bishop change made us worse if anything – Bishop had basically no impact on the game whatsoever and if anything made us a bit less solid. Whittaker and Cullen on the periphery again, Maguire not at the races. Whatever was said at half-time didn’t work at all and the subs didn’t do much good – Hopper had a bit of an impact when he came on but not a telling one and the ball never seemed to sit right for Marquis.

It’s not as if we seemed particularly affected by the unexpected break either – we were poor right from the start of the second half, I think.”

Impish: “Not sure what to say about watching that tonight. We know MA likes to get the ball down and play it on the ground, when it works it can be a joy to witness but when it doesn’t we look so laboured. Can anyone explain why we get free kicks near the halfway line or in the opposing half, send all the (small) big men up front only to either play the ball sideways, backward, and often turn down the opportunity to get it into the box?”

JT_LCFC: “By taking Scully out the side, it really limited Bramall getting forward. Cullen and Maguire don’t have the pace to play a wide role and both got congested in the midfield. In the end, they could sit back and we just pass between the centre-halves.

Doncaster are probably as bad as you will see in the lower 2 leagues. It’s a tough one to take tonight.”

berksimps: “The extended highlights are a stark reminder of what happened last night. Loads of possession and chances but no goals against the team with the “worst defensive record in the League”. No-one took responsibility for putting the ball into the net. Norton-Cuffey, who was superb again, must be wondering why he bothered to pass the ball towards any of our nominated strikers.

Poor touches and choices in their box and some reasonable but not great keeping kept it to 0-0 for far too long. Recently we have been less organised and more predictable going forward in the second half of games, and that theme continued. In hindsight, the substitutions were either ineffective, or too late. An obvious handball, then after the pen it was all about frustration and hit and hope. And at home,  we certainly know how to serve up frustration. A difficult one to take.”
