He received an average rating of 4.98 following the 3-1 win away at Sunderland in January 2022. Some of the comments can be found below:

GreenNeedle: “I don’t think he did that bad. Was up against a rough house team in Sunderland, playing hoofball on a pitch that seemed to be a player’s nightmare. Can’t tell from the angle of the camera if he was right with their penalty. Could easily have given more cards and sent a few off for 2 but held back.

Not sure on sending their manager off. Looked like he was trying to restrain our player rather than get at him.

6/10.”

berksimps: “A load of soft yellows, inexplicable that Doyle did not see red. A tougher than average game to ref with no quarter given and so many Sunderland fans seeking advantage. 5.5.”

PerthImp: “5/10. Mixed emotions about Mr Simpson’s performance. Difficult game in front of almost 30,000 passionate Sunderland supporters. Several cards branded, not all necessary, but he got the red card right and could have issued another to Doyle. I know Lee Johnson manhandled McGrandles but thought yellow was enough from what I saw. Missed a few challenges but how much he was trying to play advantage I couldn’t tell.”

Jeremy Simpson oversaw a total of 28 matches during the 2022/23 season, all of which were in the Conference. He showed 121 (4.32) yellow cards and 1 red card. He showed 7 yellow cards on two occasions: Burnley 2-1 Reading in the Championship and AFC Wimbledon 2-3 Stevenage in League Two, including a booking for former Imps loanee Jordan Roberts.

So far this season, Simpson has refereed 10 matches, showing 35 (3.50) yellow cards and 1 red card. His only red card of the season came in the Championship encounter between West Bromwich Albion and Middlesbrough (4-2) when he sent off Tommy Smith. He also showed 4 yellow cards in this match, including a booking for former Imps loanee Morgan Rogers.
