Double Figures In A Season

Here’s something interesting, if you are interested by these things.

It is always nice to see a number of different goalscorers reach double figures in the same season because it usually means you have been successful. Not always, but a good indication.

You can discuss what has been said in this article HERE, as well as many other topics on our 100% Imps forum! Ahead of tomorrow’s match, we have published a Lincoln City v Rochdale Quiz, which can be found at the bottom of the page. Every page view helps raise money for Lincoln City Football Club!

Look at the present list for 2020-21:

15: Jorge Grant
12: Anthony Scully
9: Tom Hopper
8: Brennan Johnson, Lewis Montsma
5: Harry Anderson, Morgan Rogers

So, two players are there already with a minimum of 13 games to play. It would be surprising if Tom Hopper and Brennan Johnson both fail to join them, so City should reach a minimum of four this season, injuries permitting.

City have had four in a season on 17 previous occasions:

1895-96: Matthew Gillespie 15, Billy Gillespie 13, John ‘Jimmy’ Frettingham 12, Alec Smith 10
1911-12: Walter Miller 21, Sandy McCubbin 20, Billy Batty 19, Jack Manning 11
1926-27: Billy Dinsdale 25, Harold Andrews 21, Charlie Bosbury 10, Frank Pegg 10
1927-28: Billy Dinsdale 29, Charlie Bosbury 18, Frank Pegg 14, Harry Pringle 10
1929-30: Henry Roberts 21, Tom Maidment 17, William Ellis 11, Evan Jenkins 11
1934-35: Johnny Campbell 18, Chick Reed 17, Bob Iverson 15, Thomas Robinson 14
1935-36: Johnny Campbell 30, Alf Horne 15, Bernard Towler 14, Charles Bulger 10
1936-37: Johnny Campbell 36, John Callender 16, Bernard Towler 16, Dickie Deacon 11
1950-51: John Garvie 21, Andy Graver 20, Ernie Whittle 14, Roy Finch 12
1959-60: John McClelland 18, Bert Linnecor 14, Andy Graver 12, Derek Hawksworth 10
1970-71: Phil Hubbard 19, Percy Freeman 16, Derek Trevis 16, Bobby Svarc 15
1971-72: Phil Hubbard 19, Percy Freeman 14, Dixie McNeil 13, Alan Gilliver 10
1974-75: Sam Ellis 15, Peter Graham 13, John Ward 13, Alan Harding 10
1975-76: John Ward 29, Percy Freeman 25, Sam Ellis 15, Peter Graham 11
1976-77: John Ward 18, Peter Graham 17, Phil Hubbard 11, Sam Ellis 10
1982-83: Derek Bell 29, Gordon Hobson 16, Glenn Cockerill 12, George Shipley 11
1987-88: Phil Brown 20, John McGinley 20, Paul M Smith 13, Bob Cumming 10

If Brennan and Tom do make it to ten, it will be the first time since 1987-88 that four Lincoln players have reached double figures in the same season. That is quite surprising.

What is the club record?

Five players, and that has been done on only three occasions:

1930-31: Billy Dinsdale 25, Walter Lax 20, Philip Cartwright 14, Tom Maidment 14, Harry Kitching 10
1946-47: Tommy Cheetham 30, Jimmy Hutchinson 17, Geoff Marlow 13, Alec Davies 10, Harry Parr 10
1951-52: Andy Graver 39, John Garvie 21, Ernie Whittle 20, Harry Troops 15, Roy Finch 14

So, two more players would give us four for the first time in 34 years.

Three more would give us five for the first time in 69 years, and equal the club record.

Four more sets a new record entirely.

Wouldn’t it be nice to see Morgan Rogers and Lewis Montsma get over the ten-goal line too, and set a new club record?

Chances are, it would never be beaten.

So come on lads, make some history for yourselves, for all time.
