Ahead of Saturday’s match versus Portsmouth at Sincil Bank, we have had a look at some of the past encounters with Pompey. You can get involved with this thread on the forum here. Saturday’s referee is Sunny Singh Gill and the kick-off is at 12:30.

NEW QUIZ: How much can you remember about the last time The Imps played Portsmouth at Sincil Bank? You can have a go at the quiz at the bottom of the page or CLICK HERE (opens in a new window)!

Cricklewoodimp: “We have one win out of thirteen in the last 44 years and that was four years ago at Fratton Park. Portsmouth played over an hour of that game with ten men – Morgan Rogers getting our winner.”

Chesterimp (in reply to the above): “I remember the last win before that run, which will have been our last home win v Portsmouth, in March 1980, Murphy building his side which won promotion the following season then came so close to that second promotion.

Pompey rolled into town, chasing promotion and expecting to win but young Phil Turner’s goal put them in their place for a 1-0 win, memories fade from that far back but that’s one goal I can remember.

I can remember a great atmosphere and I’m surprised the gate was below 5000!

Can our current crop of promising young players replicate that on Saturday, please? Better still, one each for Joe, Freddie and Jovon……”

Scotimp: “I remember Turner’s goal in 1980, nicely executed from the edge of the box at the South Park End. Portsmouth were on their way to promotion that season too, eventually just making it ahead of Bradford City on goal difference. An omen?”

Sigiriya: “Stood in the North Stand at Fratton Park in November 1982. We were beaten 4-1 after leading 1 nil. A very foggy night. The only way I knew anything was happening was the sound of 4 separate episodes of cheering from the Fratton End. Not many Imps there that night. One of those who was, though, was a girl who had been in my academic form group at school. Her name was Jeanette. Shan’t say her surname. Sincil Banks might remember her. She was in the Milton End cage, which was for away fans. I said hello to her as I walked passed and got a few looks from the Pompey fans on their way out. Kept my mouth shut after that! My first Imps away match on account of me living in Portsmouth at the time! Spent many a happy Saturday afternoon after that in the Fratton End during my time in Pompey, including memorable cup games against Forest, Villa and Spurs. The most memorable one, though, has to be the FA Cup game against the Scummers in the early 1980s. What an afternoon that was! Unforgettable! Good fans, Pompey fans. Passionate about their club, like us. Never seen us beat them so hoping that changes on Saturday. Should be a great atmosphere and a cracking game of football..”
