Following Sunday’s 2-0 win at home against Charlton Athletic in League One, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what three things they learned from the match.

Here’s what Chesterimp said:

1. This squad has Cowley-level minerals combined with a level of skill and team understanding beyond anything from that era. They look a natural fit to this level of football, something that is rarely seen by Imps supporters in living memory.

2. Those ‘minerals’ were evident in the approach to this game. A few looked leggy from Thursday night and the intense start to the season, and were second best for most of the first half and with better finishing would have been behind by half time. Given the nature and timing of the first goal, most of us expected a real onslaught from Charlton in the second half, but it never materialised. The Imps neutralised any threat, looked composed and in the end it was Charlton who were out of energy and ideas – or maybe Lee Bowyer is a rubbish manager.

3. As if we didn’t know, there is some serious young talent at this club, the two full-backs, in particular, stood out today. A 17-year full-back is not necessarily a problem, Charlton fans, if he’s good enough.

And here’s what Gratzimp said:

1. After the Liverpool game, I was expecting the worst even though we performed admirably, we were torn apart by some quality finishes. Had Charlton had the finishing power of Liverpool we would have lost the game. We seem to be giving teams to much time and space on the ball. Inviting them to have a go. Having said that, the back line puts in a hell of a shift and the other reason CA didn’t score was down to our players putting in blocks, and closing them down quickly (after initially giving them the space).

2. It looks like we are a 2nd half team, by that I mean we don’t really get into the game so much in the 1st half, content on sitting back a bit and conserving our energies for the 2nd period when the opposition has tired. We have the youth in the squad to do this, so at present, it isn’t such an issue. But when we face fitter teams it could well be. It’s what you do with possession you have, and we bide our time for the best chances, in order to get the best results. We also have a squad that “FITS”, in other words, we have replacements that can slot in easily, or switch the game when needed.

3. We have a very good scouting network in place. Come on who of us (if anyone) thought when we signed Lewis Montsma from the Dutch 2nd division got excited and thought “Oh brilliant, that guy is fantastic”, I would say 99% of us thought “WHO???”. But, he has been very good for us, he has played in every game of a very tough start, and shown his fitness levels, he is also our top scorer. He is VERY important to the team, and Ben Watson of Charlton obviously didn’t think much of him, as he was nowhere when the Monster headed in.
