Who Are Ya? - Portsmouth (Supporter Q&A)

The last time The Imps hosted today’s opponents Portsmouth was on Tuesday 23rd November 2021, in front of a crowd of 8,533, including 746 Pompey supporters. The visitors won 3-0 that night thanks to goals scored by Marcus Harness (45+3′), George Hirst (66′), and Reeco Hackett-Fairchild (89′).

How long have you supported Portsmouth?

Since 1982. My first game was Pompey v Oxford at Fratton Park.

Where did you finish last season?

In a disappointing 10th in a season, we should’ve been pushing for the playoffs.

What do you think of your manager?

It’s early days but he seems to have simplified the tactics and 433 suits us with the players we have.

What were/are your hopes and expectations for the 2022/23 season?

We should be pushing for promotion, we have no given right to be promoted but with constantly getting crowds of 17k plus we really should be challenging but sadly we’re not.

One(s) to watch?

It’s a hard one because, at the beginning of the season, there would be so many to choose from but now there are only a few. Dale is direct but has little end product, Morrell is a great central midfield player and then there’s Paddy Lane who we signed in Jan. Joe Rafferty is back after a long injury and is a great RB. But for me Morrell shades it.

Which teams do you think will finish in the top six in League One?

Plymouth, Sheff Weds, Ipswich, Bolton, Derby, and Barnsley.

Which teams do you think will finish in the bottom four in League One?

FGR for sure then it could be Cambs, Cheltenham, and Morecambe.

What are your thoughts on Lincoln City?

Have a great home record this season and it’s going to take a team to do something special to break that run. Could finish slightly higher than the current league position.

What do you think the score will be?

It depends on what Pompey team turns up but it could possibly be a 1-1 draw.

Random fact about your Club?

There are a few actually but I will go for this. On February 22nd, 1956, Fratton Park played host to the first-ever league match in the UK to be played under floodlights, against none other than Newcastle United.

If you could steal one Lincoln City player for your own team, who would it be and why?

Jack Diamond chips in with goals and assists, something we need right now.

What are your proudest and most embarrassing moments as a Portsmouth supporter?

Promotion to the Premier League and of course winning the FA Cup in 08 are up there.

As for embarrassing it’s a personal one where I was caught on TV with bright yellow hair whilst wearing a bright yellow coat. I had lost a bet and had my hair dyed blonde but they left the bleach on longer than it should and I was on TV several times. But hey it was the 90s haha.

Who would you say is your most underrated player?

Louis Thompson, we really missed him in midfield when he broke his leg against Bristol.

Do you have a Supporters Trust and what role do they play at the Club?

We do, they were instrumental in saving the club before selling to the Eisners. Now they sit on the Heritage and Advisory board discussing matters from a fan’s perspective to the owners.

Which was your favourite match involving Portsmouth?

There’s been a few over the years but for me playing AC Milan at Fratton Park. That was one special night under the lights that night.

Which was your least favourite match involving Portsmouth?

Now, this is a tough one! There have been few over the years but it has to have been against Rochdale away when Richie Barker was manager. He didn’t last long after that result. He had lost the fans and the team by that point and we were heading out of L2 under him.
