Answers to the questions Scotimp posted on 12th January

1. What distinction is held by Chris Moyses and John Schofield?

Quite simply, the last 2 City players to be appointed full time manager.

2. Who was the first West Indian to play for Lincoln?

St Kitts-born Bert Bowery, who came on loan from Nottingham Forest with Tony Woodcock in our 1975-76 Fourth Division championship season. Bowery had been Brian Clough’s first signing at Forest and came to Lincoln as cover for the injured Percy Freeman. Both Woodcock and Bowery scored on their Lincoln debuts, a 6-0 win over Southport at Sincil Bank on 25 February 1976. Unfortunately Bowery never fulfilled his early promise and later tried his luck in the USA before returning to non-League football in England.

His son Jordan currently plays for Rotherham after a 2 year spell in the Premiership with Aston Villa.

3. Which famous football manager played in the same team as Colin Murphy?

Well done Merthyr. The answer is the current England manager Roy Hodgson, at Gravesend & Northfleet (now Ebbsfleet United) in 1969-71. They won promotion to the Southern League Premier Division in 1970-71.

THIS is worth a read.

Hodgson is extreme right of the front row, Murphy third from the left of the middle row.

Neither Hodgson nor Murphy ever kicked a ball in League football.

4. Which Lincoln-born striker became a Burnley legend?

George Beel. He scored on his City debut in a 3-5 defeat at Barnsley on 18 October 1919 but his 6 goals from 23 games were not enough to earn him a permanent contract. He arrived at Burnley in April 1923 via Merthyr Town and Chesterfield and went on to become their all-time record scorer (187 goals from 337 games) and record scorer in a season (35 in 1927-28).

He returned to Lincoln towards the end of the 1931-32 season, when his 6 goals from 9 games helped City to the Third Division North championship. Predictably, he scored on his second City debut too, in a 3-1 win over Barrow on 13 February 1932. He never made an appearance in the Second Division team in 1932-33 and moved on to finish his career with Rochdale.

5. Why might Tony Cunningham’s club record stand forever?

He holds the club record for the most goals scored in the League Cup (8). Obviously City cannot play in it again until they are back in the League.

6. Which City striker later won 5 caps for the USA?

Ade Coker, in 1984.

7. Which former City player was the manager of Stafford Rangers when they knocked Lincoln out of the FA Cup in 1992?

Dennis Booth.

8. What was last seen at Sincil Bank on 10 September 1975?

The wall behind the South Park goal, which collapsed when City scored the winner in a 2-1 win over Stoke in the League Cup. The decision was taken not to rebuild the wall and the terrace was never used again. As a result of the accident, buttresses were built against the other 3 perimeter walls around the ground.

9. Who carried his girlfriend around the training pitch?

Adrian Patulea, in an effort to convince manager Peter Jackson to give him a deal. It worked.

10. Who is the only City player to have been the mystery guest on A Question Of Sport?

This was a good one. He was no longer a player when he was on. The answer is Graham Taylor, in the episode broadcast on 27 January 2008.

Back again on Monday morning (or very late on Sunday night if you are very lucky…)
