“We made 5 changes and still gave an almost full strength Everton side a run for their money.”

|

Following last night’s 4-2 defeat at home against Premier League side Everton in the Second Round of the Carabao Cup, we asked our members what three things they learned from the match.

Here’s what Sincilbanks said:

1. We learnt our squad quality (if not our depth!) is more than adequate. We made 5 changes and still gave an almost full strength Everton side a run for their money. Considering how deep the water was we threw Lewis into to see if he could sink or swim I thought he was excellent. He spent almost the entire night defending the quality balls Delph was pinging over this head and did absolutely fine. Added marks for sticking one on Richarlison after he was briefly possessed by the spirit of Lionel Blair (and not Lionel Messi), you don’t come to our gaffe and indulge in that kind of premiership prima donna crap and get away scot-free.

2. We learnt that when even the most calm in control team such as Everton concede an equaliser against the run of play they can get rattled. For the 5 or 10 minutes after that equaliser they pulled everyone back and resorting to hacking the ball clear as we piled on some pressure for the only time in the game.

3. We learnt that Fabian Delph probably needs to go seek out Bruno and ask him how to volley the ball, watching a man on probably well over 50 grand a week not even able to hit the corner flag with a volley was highly amusing, how many caps does he have?

And here’s what GreenNeedle said:

1. We might be one of the fittest teams at our level and quite often it shows but Premier League players are not just better-skilled players. They are more often than not also much better athletes and as such have much more stamina as part of their overall package. This showed last night in the last 10 minutes where roles were reversed from our normal experience of us being the ones to take advantage of this.

2. Despite the changes we made to the team last night and a division higher with different tactics are 2 lines of 2 (midfield and defence) are still slow to move forward when we clear the ball. too close together for me and means that opposition can just leave their 8 player sup the pitch and take their time to pick a spot to launch to.

3. Bruno is a great player and was a superb goal last night but he was in and out of the game. Probably more out than in. He has great moments and these are a joy to watch but he can be patchy, both within single games and often in runs of games. Like last season, he will have a run of 5 or 6 games where he is “the man” and then have another run where he isn’t having the best of games.

Oh, and finally, here’s what sedgleyimp said:

1. Commitments mean that I can’t get to many home midweek games but last night showed that Sincil Bank under the floodlights and full is one hell of a place to spend an evening. The atmosphere from start to finish was fantastic and buoyed by Everton’s away support who did their bit as well. I hope it translated well on the TV screens

2. Do we need to be a little quicker on distribution from our goalkeepers? I might be a little unfair in comparing England’s current goalkeeper to our reserve, and Smith played very well last night but what was very noticeable to me was how quickly Pickford was able to get Everton back on the front foot. One kicked pass to their striker in the first half which he then rattled onto our post was worthy of Glenn Hoddle, both in accuracy and speed of thought. This continued throughout the whole match. Late on and just after their 3rd goal Smith had a similar chance to set Toffolo away down the left but didn’t. Small but key margins

3. Nights like last night make you remember why you started watching football in the first place. We lost but what a great game it was. Sometimes you have to applaud when an opponent hits an almost perfect free-kick. You have to appreciate a wonderful cross and header. We stood toe to toe with a good team full of current Internationals and played our part in a wonderful piece of entertainment
