Ahead of tomorrow night’s match away at Wigan Athletic in League One, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what three things they think The Imps need to do to pick up all three points.

1. Mind the Gap. On Saturday we played pretty well and fully deserved at least the point we gained. I thought everybody played fine and that does include our midfield three. However, there is one aspect that caused a few palpitations during the match. The free runs afforded them straight through the middle really need to be stopped. There was one in particular when Wednesday’s central defender Iorfa literally went from their area almost to ours with not a challenge in sight. It wasn’t as if he suddenly became Usain Bolt either as his running style could be best described as a lollop. Their goal also came because the initial shot came from a player given too much room. We just about got away with this on Saturday, but we can’t let that happen. Teams will punish us, especially those in very good form and we face one of those tomorrow.

2. Someone stay in the centre. Maguire is a very busy player and you can see that he will be an asset to us, just not as a number 9. He likes to get involved in the set-up play and will drop deep and wide. I don’t have a problem with this as long as someone is picking up his role centrally. Only when Draper and Nlundulu came on last Saturday did we have someone to properly occupy their central defenders and we earned the draw with both of them on the pitch. So let Maguire do what he wants to do as he has the look of a player who will make chances. We just need someone in the middle to get on the end of them. That at the moment looks like it will fall to our Saints loanee or our very promising youngster. So let one of them have the start tomorrow. It may produce something good.

3. Relax and play your game. Wigan are a form side in our league and have spent lots of money assembling a squad to challenge. I won’t get into the discussions over how they have gone from giving creditors a pittance to Wyke (allegedly) ten grand a week in the space of a few months, but the reality of tomorrow night is that we are the underdogs. We were that at Wednesday and the players seemed more relaxed in that position. So we can go into the match knowing that most expect a loss, so enjoy the game and just play your game. Every team is capable of beating any other team in this division and tomorrow just could be one of those nights.
