“This is where the balancing act kicks in, early and with a vengeance.”

Ahead of tonight’s match at home against Scunthorpe United in the EFL Trophy, we asked our members what three things they think The Imps need to do to pick up all three points.

Here’s what Chesterimp said:

1. This is where the balancing act kicks in, early and with a vengeance. In a normal season, managers are juggling squads to play (and hopefully win) these games without unduly risking key first-choice players for league games. In this weird, compact, (initially) crowd less season this becomes more of a concern. Team selection will be with Saturday’s important and demanding first league game in mind. MA has highlighted the versatility in his young squad and that will be put to the test immediately to field a team capable of beating a side, hammered 4-0 just 2 weeks ago, balancing injury recovery and fatigue for players earmarked for starting on Saturday and with a view to the Carabao Cup game next week which becomes significant with the prize of a 3rd round home tie against the Premiership champions and likely live TV revenue. This is chess with real footballers.

2. Play the youngsters, fringe squad members and, if it doesn’t prejudice Saturday’s selection, new recruits. That may entail a switch in formation from the 4-3-3 at Crew to 4-4-2 or something else. Again, a test of that valued versatility.

3. Treat that 4-0 ‘friendly’ win a fluke. Scunny were woeful that night but may have a significantly different or better-motivated team, that result counts for nothing. A scruffy 1-0 win is job done.
