The Summer Transfer Window – A Bit of Perspective

Some are disappointed by our transfer window business. At the moment I am not because the proof of the pudding will be in the eating as they say and time will tell.

However, let’s look at football economics. As a club, we rely on a regular injection of funds from our investors to sustain us at this level currently that’s just the harsh realities of life in League 1. We are trying to move away from that by selling on players at a profit and getting various sell-ons etc. I give you Scully and Toffolo. So in essence we are doing exactly what we said we would do.

Now the issue of replacements. Can we really afford to be going out and buying a proven forward no we can’t and that’s why we are looking to develop the likes of Kendall, Makama and potentially Draper? Yes, we will miss Scully’s goals but I think we still have some good attacking options and I think we will score goals.

Are we a bit light on numbers, yes we possibly are but as a club can we afford to carry a huge squad given the economic time bomb that is starting to manifest itself and from which football won’t be immune from? Our own home attendance of fans is already down a little bit on last season and that will be felt by most clubs going forward.

I think the club are being very prudent as we need a stable ship for the choppy seas that lie ahead and if come January we find ourselves in a bit of trouble (which I personally cannot see as we are much better than last season already) then I am sure financial prudence now will allow us to invest and improve as we did last season to pull away from trouble but if we blow it all now it could be a disaster.
