The Enormity of The Task

What an incredible start to the season with 5 wins and only 1 defeat in the first 7 league games with stylish top-notch performances thrown in for good measure. Having taken full recognisance of that, a cursory glance at the league table then provides a sobering check on the level that the team are competing at and the magnitude of what is required to finish in the top 10 let alone try and bag a playoff spot.

In spite of a start that is impressive at any level there are still two clubs above the Imps with Sunderland set to go above them should they win their game in hand and Doncaster who have set off like a train, to join the Imps on equal points if they win theirs.

Money bags Peterborough are tucked in one point behind and Charlton who have strengthened significantly could be only three points adrift should they win their additional match. Portsmouth who lag by 5 points haven’t got going yet despite the quality of the squad at their disposal and it only takes a managerial change or for them to click, to bring them to the party.

The vaunted Fleetwood and Oxford are struggling to get a foothold in the season and the delightful Accrington continue to upset the perceived logic.

So before we get ahead of ourselves let’s take a moment to take stock and assess the enormity of the task ahead. What it does show is the level The Imps are competing at requires them to run in order to stand still.

Far from being intimidated by the challenge though this squad of players should take considerable confidence from the manner of how they have started the season and use it as the benchmark as the levels of consistency and performance required to tie down a top 10 finish.
