Ahead of Saturday’s match away at Sunderland in League One, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what three things they think The Imps need to do to pick up all three points.

You can discuss what has been said in this article HERE, as well as many other topics on our 100% Imps forum! We have also published a Lincoln City v Sunderland Quiz, which can be found just below the three things. Every page view helps raise money for Lincoln City Football Club!

Here’s what sedgleyimp said:

1. Just relax and enjoy it. The expectations for this game are low. Sunderland are a team in form and buoyed by having won a trophy. Having looked at the expected score thread it seems that the black clouds have descended to a very low altitude above many a supporter whose expectations had been raised this season. So we go into the match with something of a free hit. A defeat is expected, and seemingly a heavy one at that. So as a team go into the match knowing that the pressure is off. We are underdogs and that is a position where you can play with a bit more freedom and that can work to our advantage. The pressure and expectation will be far more upon Sunderland. It will be at the level our players were facing in the last two home games. So relax and play your game knowing that the pressure is off.

2. Stretch the Game using the width of the pitch. Sunderland seem to like to play quite centrally. Their formation, if reported accurately, is often 4-2-2-2. That suggests that there will be space on the wings for our quick players and counter-attacking full-backs. Their pitch seemed pretty decent only a few weeks ago in the Pizza semi-final so should suit our style. Use as much of that pitch as we can. Make sure that the selection of starting players can use that space (cough……Eyoma).

3. Keep the discipline. We still concede a number of soft free-kicks close to our own area. When you are playing against McGeady and Wyke, such fouls must be avoided. McGeady’s crossing and Wyke’s aerial threat will punish us in those circumstances. Restricting their chances will increase ours.
