Following the 2-0 defeat away at Shrewsbury Town in League One, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what three things they learnt from the match.

1. When you are on top in a game you have to make that dominance pay. For the first half an hour on Saturday, we were very much on top. Some good football was being played and chances were being created. Those chances weren’t clear cut but we were certainly on top and looking like the only side capable of winning the game. Then we let them back into the match and it went horribly wrong from that point on. When you are on top in a game you really have to make it count.

2. A lack of impact subs cause us issues when we are chasing a game. I appreciate that we didn’t have the likes of Mandriou or Bishop available and they can make a difference if brought off the bench, but for actual game-changers we were sadly lacking them on Saturday. We only made one change and some may think that was strange when you are losing a game but other than the change that was made in bringing on Hopper you had a combination of defensive players and a youth striker still trying to settle into the rigours of League One football. The likes of Sorensen and Roughan are great substitutes if you are defending a lead but they are not going to get you back into a match you are behind in.

3. Early kick-offs don’t make for great football. It was a bit strange kicking off with the sun directly overhead and at times directly into our supporter’s eyes on Saturday. It always seems to me that games which kick off at that time of the day just don’t flow as well. Routines are generally all over the place for everyone and it becomes a little bit of a chore. They should be avoided at all times even in economic troubling times.
