1. For what reason was Jock Dodds banned from running his greyhounds at Sheffield’s Hyde Park Stadium in the 1930s?

b) For painting a dog

He painted a dog black and white to resemble one of his own, which was not as fast. His ruse was uncovered when it started raining. He were a bit of a lad, that Ephraim.

2. Prior to Joe Morrell, who was the last Lincoln City player to win a full cap for Wales?

c) David Felgate

Felgate played the second half of a friendly against Romania at Wrexham on 12 October 1983 (in between the two games against Spurs, for older fans), and kept a clean sheet as Wales won 5-0. What a pity there were only 4,161 there to see it. David Pugh won three of his seven caps while on Lincoln’s books, the last coming on 18 March 1901 in a 6-0 defeat to England at Newcastle. Dick Krzywicki and David Phillips had finished their international careers by the time they arrived at Lincoln.

3. Who was the last surviving member of the 1951-52 Division Three (North) championship-winning squad?

a) Jimmy Jones

Jimmy died on 5 May 2015 at the age of 87, 16 months after lifelong friend Andy Graver (the second last survivor).

4. The father of which ex-Imp was bodyguard to Prince Charles for 25 years?

d) Ollie Palmer

Former police officer Andy Palmer also looked after Prince Harry, Prince William and the Queen at various times. When he retired in 2013, he was given a garden party at Buckingham Palace.

5. Who scored the first goal of the Cowley era?

d) Adam Marriott

Marriott scored in the 28th minute of the 3-1 win at Woking on the opening day of the season, 6 August 2016.

6. Who is the only Lincoln City player to score for England C?

c) Elliott Whitehouse

Whitehouse headed England ahead after 7 minutes of a 2-1 win over Estonia in Tallinn on 15 November 2016. Estonia equalised two minutes later, with Jamal Lowe completing the scoring after just 13 minutes. Alex Woodyard captained England in what proved to be the last of his five England C appearances.

7. Who was Lincoln City’s first £1,000 footballer?

a) Johnny Campbell

Campbell joined the Imps from First Division Leicester for a club record £1,250 on 1 December 1933. Campbell had a good record at Leicester, scoring 14 times in 22 appearances including goals in his first two and in his last two games for them. The fee of £1,250 is equivalent to £90,000 today.

8. Who missed a vital penalty in the match at Burnley on 10 April 1982 that eventually cost the Imps promotion to the Second Division?

b) George Shipley

Shipley hit the foot of the right-hand post early in the second half, allowing Burnley to win the match in the 70th minute with a Billy Hamilton volley.

The miss proved very costly at the end of the season. Burnley finished as champions, three points ahead of the Imps who missed promotion by a point in fourth. Had Shipley scored, Lincoln would have finished second, two points behind champions Carlisle, and Burnley would not even have been promoted.

Justice was probably done, though: it was a blatant dive by David Carr that won the penalty in the first place.

9. What distinction fell to Dave Smith during the 1975-76 championship season?

c) He scored the 100th league goal of the season

…which was City’s third goal in the 3-0 win at Stockport on 12 April 1976. He had also scored the winner in the 2-1 win over Darlington five days earlier that gave the Imps the point they needed to confirm promotion.

10. What achievement is shared by (among others) William Gillespie, John Ward, Billy Dinsdale, Ernie Whittle and Tony Lormor?

d) They all scored four goals in a match

A total of 16 players have scored four in a competitive game for the Imps. In chronological order, the complete list is:

Frank Smallman, William Gillespie, Hugh Robertson, Sandy McCubbin, Harry Havelock, Billy Dinsdale, Henry Roberts, Allan Hall, John Campbell, Ernie Whittle, Andy Graver, John Ward, Gordon Hobson, Tony Lormor, Jamie Forrester, and Jonny Margetts.

Future England international Henry Roberts is the only player to score four in a match twice, which he did in the space of eight games in March/April 1930.

Billy Langham scored four in a match twice in the space of three games in the United League competition in 1908-09, although historians are divided over whether to treat this competition as bona fide.

3 players have scored 5 in a match (Frank Smallman, Billy Langham, and John Campbell), and 2 players six in a match (Frank Keetley and Andy Graver).
