Following Saturday’s 4-0 defeat away at Peterborough United in League One, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what three things they learnt from the match.

Here’s what sedgleyimp said:

1. Sometimes you just have to hold your hands up and say we got beaten by a better team on the day. Yes their budget is clearly higher than ours and they can afford their strike duo of Marriott and Clarke-Harris, something not too many teams in this division can do, and players like them will be the difference in making a promotion run or not. But sometimes it is just not going to happen for our team and today was one of those days. It does seem that we did well to keep the score down to four, although there is also a suggestion that Peterborough declared early in the second half. But today’s result does not mean that knee-jerk reactions are required. The reality of a 4-0 loss is that you get just as many points as a hard-fought 1-0 loss. Peterborough will turn over many more teams with similar scores as the season progresses

2. Recovery times are important. Today’s team had one enforced change from that heroic back-to-the-wall win on Tuesday night. Did the effort needed in that match mean that players today were running on empty from the first whistle? Difficult to fully say but just sometimes you have to utilise all members of your squad when what you might consider to be your first XI have run themselves into the ground only days earlier.

3. Joe Ward could very much be considered one that got away from us. We had him on loan in 2017 and he did pretty well. I’m pretty sure we did look into the possibility of signing him that summer when he was released by Brighton but it didn’t happen and he ended up at Woking. A player who has blossomed at London Road and one who, with hindsight, we really should have put a bit more effort into securing on a permanent deal.
