Before diving into the much anticipated EFL Cup clash with West Ham United, Mark Kennedy made sure to recognise the loss of Imp’s club legend Colin Murphy.

QUIZ: How much can you remember/do you know about the League Cup ties between Lincoln City and West Ham United in 1982? Have a go at the quiz at the bottom of the page!

You can discuss what has been said in this article here, or in the comments section at the bottom, as well as get involved with many other topics on our 100% Imps forum!

Colin Murphy: Colin, until recent illness intervened unfailingly continued to support the Imps at matches through thick and thin. He was a very prominent figure at Lincoln City Football Club and MK referred to Colin as a legend. Of course, on the one hand, it is a very sad occasion but the minutes applause before the game is significant.

“A good opportunity for us to show our appreciation to Colin; what he’s done for this club, what a great guy he was, especially with his family being there”.

West Ham United: They tick all the boxes – outstanding team, incredible manager and a huge history. WHU have already chalked up some impressive results this season and it doesn’t matter what side the incredibly experienced and successful David Moyes picks, they are all top players. Regardless of the team they put out the system will remain the same bar a couple of tweaks.

“We’re going to have to be at our very best and hope they have an off day”.

MK certainly doesn’t see the game as a free hit, explaining that he seeks to find learning from all games. It is equally as possible to find negatives in victories as it is positives in defeats. He as always, will be setting up the Imps looking to win the game. MK responded to the possibility of extreme weather (Storm Agnes high winds predicted) but took the view that any wind issues that did materialise were equally likely to disrupt both sides. Certainly, severe wind was problematic for all footballing styles be it a direct or passing approach that is employed.

One notable absentee for the Imps remains Danny Mandroiu, with the fixture coming just a little too early for him. Jack Vale is another who will not feature and MK will discuss the status of the Blackburn Rovers youngster later in the week.

MK was really pleased for everybody connected with the club to finally be rewarded with a home tie after the ridiculously disproportionate number of away ties the Imps had been previously handed in the competition. The LNER will be at capacity, as it often nearly is for home fans at least – he expects the ‘place’ to be rocking and it is usually the smaller stadiums when full that really deliver on the atmosphere.
