It was a very welcome sight to see Michael Appleton taking the press conference ahead of the season opener versus Gillingham.

Recovery from Illness – MA discussed the good prognosis following his treatment for illness during the close season. He felt he had been one of the lucky ones to notice the disease early and get it dealt with promptly. MA understands that the operation has been a success. He has been back at the club full-time for just over a week.

“Looking forward to getting back to what some people say, what I do best”.

Watching from the Stands: MA confirmed he had been watching pre-season games partially from the stands as he sees great benefits to observing new players, or players trying out a different role, from that vantage point. There is no doubt it helps to do that. MA can actually see the value of doing so during the first half of competitive games in order to get a feel of what is going on, before moving down to the sidelines for the second half. MA quipped that he didn’t know if the fans would let him get away with that and he may have to be at the club for a few years before he would have the confidence to try it.

Pre-Season Training: MA confirmed there had been a number of injury issues, in conjunction with a truncated pre-season due to the playoffs at the end of last season.

“It’s been tough both from what you can and can’t do on the training field. From a recruitment point of view obviously, you’re almost spinning plates at different stages because you don’t know which division you’re in. Having said that, we’ve got a group that are very fit (injuries aside)….a young group. They need to get us through a certain amount of time at the start of the season; to then get to a point, maybe around October where we’ve got a fully strength squad fit and available. They’re more than capable of doing that”.
