Michael Appleton used the pre-match press conference to hone in on his thoughts about what is an important fixture against Gillingham.

MA noted that Gillingham have switched from a back five to a back four under the new stewardship of Neil Harris. As a consequence, they are much harder to beat and are capable of keeping a clean sheet (only four goals conceded in seven matches). Higher up the pitch, Gillingham look to score goals from set-pieces with Vadaine Oliver always a threat from his aerial ability.

Under the circumstances, MA identified patience as the key. “We’ve got to be patient, got to understand the importance of the game and I think they do that (the players). I think there’s a realisation of that. If it takes a last-minute goal….to swing it our way, then that’s what we have to do”.

MA had a chuckle when responding to Neil Harris’ observation that a number of Lincoln players were top eight or top six quality. “I’m not sure how to take that. I don’t know if he’s having a bit of a dig at me to say I’m doing a rubbish job, or we have got good players and on our day we are a match for anybody”.

MA was pleased to take it as complimentary to his squad of players.

On injuries, MA was incredulous at the suggestion that he may have a full complement of centre-halves available. He retorted he would have at least two, possibly three centre-halves out but there will be two fit, so ‘we’ll’ be alright.

MA reflected that the number and extent of injuries had been unprecedented during any time or any of his roles during his career.

“I’ve got to try and stay calm though, which I’m good at, at times; stay focussed and work with the players I’ve got available”

MA confirmed that not only is Tom Hopper fit and available to play, he could even start now. MA praised the player’s influence and value both off and on the field. Whilst his goal-scoring ratio has probably stopped Tom from going to the next level, MA knows exactly what he will get from Tom, his reliability week in week out, and Hopper makes it very difficult for opponents.
