Ahead of tomorrow’s match at home against Gillingham in League One, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what three things they think The Imps need to do to pick up all three points.

1. Play Tom Hopper from the start and partner him up with John Marquis. Hopper came off the bench again tonight and looked from his short cameo that he is ready to start a game. He has been our biggest miss all season without a doubt. He suits our style of play so well at both ends of the pitch. Tonight John Marquis had one of those games. He should have scored twice with what for a striker of his quality were pretty simple chances. That can happen in an isolated game. Tonight does not make Marquis a poor striker or signing. These performances can happen at even the highest level of the game. I do believe though that a twin strike force of Hopper and Marquis will cause problems for any defence in this league and that coupling will lead to wins for us. Start with both of them on Saturday and I really think Gillingham will not know what has hit them.

2. Sort out the throw-ins. Our throw-ins have become so predictable. They are slow and generally involve a player coming short and passing it back to whoever has thrown it in. Said player is then closed down immediately and we are back under pressure. Bolton tonight took throw-ins quickly and very often to a player in space, even if that meant throwing it back into their own half. What it did though was to keep possession and allow the build-up of another attack. WE need to think more about how we utilise these as at present we might as well just give the ball back to the opponents.

3. One for the supporters. Get behind the players again. We saw with the wins against Oxford and Morecambe and the draw with Wycombe that the crowd makes a huge difference. The crowd can also have an adverse effect if things are not going our way on the pitch and when you are dealing with young players their performances will suffer. So everyone let’s get behind the lads on Saturday in what really is a huge game.
