MA: “We just have to make sure that we contain Liverpool at the right time.”

|

Michael Appleton was the picture of calm and relaxed ahead of the much anticipated Liverpool tie in The League Cup on Thursday.

Covid: Results were due Thursday, 4th or 5th time the players have been tested this season with no positive results this far. It’s tricky because the disease is an unseen threat but we have been on at the players since day 1 about following good hygiene procedures so no change there. Of course, there is a little nervousness about the outcome in light of the Orient test results and ‘I’m’ not sure what the rules about putting out a youth team are but the financial implications of not playing the game are critical.

Liverpool: Preparations are slightly more difficult with the match being a Thursday evening going into a quick turn around at the weekend so care has to be given to the right levels of rest both before and after the match.

MA has no idea what 11 Liverpool will put out which is unusual as normally you have a good idea of 8/9 of the opposition starting line up. He did wonder if it would be something akin to their FA Cup 11 from last season. Regardless he knows exactly what style and set up Liverpool will deploy as that doesn’t change. MA joked that having watched the Liverpool v Chelsea match on Sunday he hoped it wouldn’t be that side.

It is imperative that the Imps stay in the game with attention paid to concentrating and not getting carried away or the tie will be over in 20 minutes. There is the belief in the Lincoln camp after the start to the season that we can give most people a game. The players are in good spirits and in football, there are always upsets and results from nowhere.

Jurgen Klopp: MA has met Jurgen a couple of times and grinned cheekily as he recalled knocking Liverpool out of The FA Cup during his time at Leicester. He holds his opposite manager in the highest regard, Jurgen is the top manager. It struck MA that JK is not the type of person that loses many ties to lower league opposition with the way he sets up.
