Ahead of tomorrow night’s match at home against Liverpool in the Third Round of the League Cup, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what three things they think The Imps need to do to win.

Here’s what sedgleyimp said:

1. Play the team, not the shirt. We are playing against the current World Club Champions, but we are unlikely to be playing against the majority of those players who won that tournament last December. It would be easy to get overawed by the history of the opposition, but it’s still a game of 11 v 11. They will rest their very best players, but will still have very good players on display. What they might not have is a team ethic. That comes with playing with your teammates week in week out. What has been noticeable from our games so far this season is you could have picked several as ‘man of the match’. That means we have players working as a team, not as talented individuals. The same might not be said of the starting XI Liverpool put out.

2. Keep to the plan. Liverpool will have scouted us but their supporters still think we are a long ball team based upon what they are typing on their forums. It just might be that their players will not be fully aware of how good we are with the ball on the grass and being passed fluently with off the ball movement. Don’t look to change the way we play just because we are playing Liverpool. Play with the same tactics as away at Bradford or home to Oxford. It might shake them up enough.

3. Enjoy the occasion. I am sure that the players are looking forward to the opportunity to play against Liverpool despite it being played down by them up to now. Yes, they would prefer a full stadium to roar them on but it is still a rare opportunity for us. When you play Football Manager one of the generic manager pre-match talks says ‘We have nothing to lose here. Go out and show them just how good we are.’ We lose it’s expected. We win we make headlines.
