Following yesterday’s 2-1 defeat at home against Hull City in League One, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what three things they learned from the match.

Here’s what sedgleyimp said:

1. It is possible to see positives after a defeat. Saturday’s game was quite a tight affair, yet as a consequence of the result, Hull gained promotion back to The Championship. They will probably go up as champions. Yet we gave them a good game and at the same time, three key players returned from injury to get some valuable game time. If we secure our play-off place in the next few games, the return of Grant, Bridcutt, and Hopper couldn’t be better timed. They will be flying and fresh come the 47th league game of the season.

2. Matches can be decided on one incident. I am not one of those supporters questioning what Regan Poole brings to the team. I actually think he is a very decent defender, who has come into a team playing well and has had to play catch up whilst not being able to train as often or as effectively with his new teammates to get that rhythm. He will be an important player for us going forward. But what Saturday showed was that games can be decided upon one key incident or, as in this case an error in judgement. That simply was what separated the two teams on Saturday, and when you consider the results of other matches between the two, that separated us from the likely champions in this league all season. We are really not too far away all being told.

3. You cannot afford to give teams a head start. Saturday was another game when we took our time to settle. The first ten minutes we seemed to still be in the dressing room. In many ways, this was very similar to the Bristol Rovers game where they hit the bar early on and had their best part of the game. The difference on Saturday was that Hull scored. That made our task much harder. You just cannot let good teams get a head start.
