Following the 1-1 draw at home against Shrewsbury Town in League One, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what three things they learned from the match.

Here’s what sedgleyimp said:

1. The relatively young team we have is still learning game by game. Often when you are a defender it is a very wise move to clear the ball out of play and allow your teammates to re-group. Yesterday you saw the need to understand what the opposition game plan is. Shrewsbury quite simply had one attacking tactic. Get the ball into a position where a throw-in can be launched into the box for their big players. It was really the only way they looked like scoring and they caused problems each and every time. Despite this, our defenders persisted with such defensive clearances. Sometimes in a game, you have to see what the opponent is doing and adapt your game to counter act it

2. One incident can disrupt a game plan. The injury to Adam Jackson affected our players I believe. It can’t be easy playing on when your teammate and friend had to be put into a neck brace and taken to hospital during the game. Yes, we scored quite soon after the injury but our general play wasn’t quite as incisive or as combative. I think that the second-half performance was very much affected by the injury and you can understand it.

3. The concussion substitute rule is being used in the EFL. I’d heard about this but honestly had forgotten about it up to yesterday. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one looking a tad puzzled when Cohen Bramall was being readied as our fourth change of the match and even more so when Freddie Draper came on as the fifth. It is pleasing to see though that this is being allowed. One of the few decent changes to the game in recent times.
