Lincoln City 1-1 Ipswich Town: Three Things We Learnt

|

Following the 1-1 draw at home against Ipswich Town in League One, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what three things they learnt from the match.

Prior to the match, we published a quiz about last season’s meeting between Lincoln City and Ipswich Town at Sincil Bank. This can be found below the three things!

Here’s what sedgleyimp said:

1. Although you only get a point, there are very different home draws being played out this season. Still unbeaten but with 10 home draws is something of an odd statistic at this stage of the season. I think many of us would have stomached a couple of losses here and there if they had been countered by wins in other matches. However, at full-time on Monday home supporters to a person rose to their feet to applaud the players off the pitch. There were none of the under-the-breath mutterings evident at the end of some home draws when the referee finally blew his whistle a little after 5pm. This in some ways felt like a win in every way except the league table.

2. Games are just so much better viewed at the ground. Monday’s game was fascinating to watch. Despite that, you look at the in-game stats and there wasn’t that many actual shots by either team. It was almost a game of chess and being in the ground I really couldn’t take my eyes off what was taking place, often off the ball. You could see how Ipswich were trying to make that extra player count, and how our players were reacting every time to what they were doing. I honestly don’t think you can get that experience from a TV screen as it is focused so very much on where the ball is, and so very often that is not where the really interesting play is taking place. In the future, I think streaming of matches will be allowed even within the current Saturday afternoon blackout period. Won’t stop me from going as I don’t want to miss those other aspects of the game cameras so often miss.

3. Is it any wonder the FA and EFL are struggling to attract quality referees anymore? It’s a job which is becoming more and more thankless. On Monday I will admit to have been out of my seat screaming for a penalty when House went down. From my vantage in the Co-op, it looked nailed on. Moments later I’m swearing again as Jackson is given a red card for a tackle which although a foul, didn’t look worthy of that colour card. The Ipswich manager lambasts the awarding of our second-half penalty, but when supporters are saying ‘we are getting a penalty for holding here’ before the corner is even taken because the referee has already warned the defenders against it, he should be calling his player a numpty, not the referee. Now since the game, I have seen angles which show that the House one would have been soft and ones where the Jacko one is a red card. So like I say it is a thankless job. Instant decisions have to be made. referees have always had to do this, it is just that role has so much more analysis done on them than they were in the past. Players don’t help by swarming around the officials and (not necessarily in this game) play-acting. I can see fewer and fewer people wanting to do this in the future and that will be a problem for the game worldwide.
