Following the 1-0 win at home against Oxford United in League One, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what three things they learnt from the match.

Prior to the match, we published a quiz about the last time the two sides met at Sincil Bank, which can be found HERE, or at the bottom of the page!

Here’s what sedgleyimp said (article discussion link):

1. Our season is just about done and dusted. Now I know we are all still scarred by the end of the 2010-11 season where we were firmly in mid-table at this stage of proceedings only to implode, but this team is made of firmer stuff, especially from a defensive standpoint. 44 points may even be enough come May 7th, but we’ll manage those extra 6 to get to the hallowed 50 figure with relative ease. I say this because the standard and commitment of our back line will mean that we won’t lose more than 2 or possibly 3 between now and then. We won’t be troubling the play-offs either despite the most optimistic viewpoint. Those six places will be filled by those teams currently occupying them. So we have 13 games to largely play out. Games to find our best system. Games to assess what we need for 2023-24. Games for those out of contract to make their claims for extended deals. So although the season is all but done, there is still much to look forward to.

2. It might be the fact that growing up, I played as a defender, but I can appreciate and enjoy our performances even when the shots-on-goal stats are a little on the thin side. If I’m being honest it was the easiest way of getting into the school team as everyone else wanted to play up front but I digress. Really good organised defensive play from your team is something to appreciate and enjoy. Yes we’d all love to have every game being the away to Bristol Rovers style, but that’s unrealistic and will probably have more letters of complaint heading the clubs way than the current style of being solid and having players in those positions who know what to do and do it well. Defensive play and organisation should be lauded higher than it usually is.

3. England’s goalkeeping position is in good hands for the future. We’ve always as a country been pretty well blessed with very good players between the sticks. Banks, Shilton, Clemence, Seaman. Even now I think Jordan Pickford and Aaron Ramsdale are excellent in that position. Looking a few years ahead though we’ll all be recalling how Carl Rushworth ‘started’ (okay Walsall had him last year) on his journey to be England’s number 1 with us. A goalkeeping masterclass on Saturday epitomised by that Gordon Banks-esque save at the end. It is a shame that we won’t have his qualities beyond May. One who will be hard to replace come the summer. A big job for the recruitment team, but let’s not forget it was they who brought him here last summer, so perhaps a bit of slack should be afforded them in that search.

Thank you to Graham Burrell and Lincoln City Football Club for the photograph!
