Lincoln City 0-1 West Ham United: Post-Match Reaction & Match Stats

|

Views from hulloutpost following the 1-0 defeat at home to Premier League side West Ham United in the Third Round of the Carabao Cup, which has set up a home tie versus Arsenal in the Fourth Round: “Very enjoyable evening and a credit to everyone connected to our club, with West Ham playing their part as well.

It really helped that both sides were looking to play the game and get on with it rather than one side or the other trying to spoil it or break it up. That’s probably the longest I’ve seen the ball in play for many a year and I don’t recall free kicks featuring at regular intervals either. That was probably reflected in how little time was added on.

We are very difficult to beat as a side and individually every player tonight had some good moments as well as an excellent team effort. I also thought we got the location of the press right collectively. It most certainly was not a low block and we didn’t leave ourselves wide open by recklessly piling in up top.

Overall I seem to remember 3 significant chances/efforts per side. Both Reeco and Ings should have scored and didn’t. They hit the post and Duffy brought out a smart save from Fabianski. Ultimately they converted their ball flashed across the six yard box and unbelievably nobody connected with our corner right across the goal at the start of the second half – fine margins indeed.

If we can somehow find a way to manage the striker situation to Christmas we will be fine. We have a good team that just have to click a little more offensively and then we could really kick on.”

PortMacImp: “It is a loss but we acquitted ourselves very well against a Premier League side that are doing well this season. The backing from the crowd was awesome. The Radio Lincolnshire commentary on iFollow was also enjoyable, particularly the commentator in the crowd, Grace, who had a fine local accent and was called “Ducky” by one fan, a classic Lincolnshire term of endearment. Despite the result, our team has done the club a great deal of credit.”

Snats: “If we had a fit striker I genuinely think we could have won that. We got into a lot of good positions but with no-one to slip it through to, we just kept going for long-range efforts. Adelakun has neither the pace nor the hold-up play to lead the line and should have been replaced at half-time really. Shame about the manner of the goal as we generally defended pretty well. Onwards and upwards but the sooner we get Walker back the better.”

clanfordimp: “Can’t ask much more than that from the players tonight, total commitment in a game that we were always in right to the very end.

Some good saves from both keepers and I think we had more efforts at goal from them even though our team was worth about £169 million less than theirs was.

Some really outstanding performances tonight and on the night we deserved the draw and to take it to the penalty shootout.

Get the rest and recovery in now and then get out there on Saturday against Cheltenham with exactly the same intensity and attitude and get them 3 points in the bag we need to keep us in touch with the playoff pack.”
