Lincoln City 0-0 Cambridge United: Views & Stats

|

Views from PerthImp following the 0-0 draw at home against Cambridge United in League One: “That was a soul-destroying performance. Better in the second half, but still not good enough. For the first time, I actually think a lot of the blame for that performance was down to MK and the coaching team. I don’t know what they are doing on the training ground but our players just lack so much confidence and don’t use their skills. There are times when they just aren’t supportive of each other with overlapping, use of the space, playing closer together to play a short, quick passing game. Long balls up to two big CBs. Last, but not least, the substitutions were far too late to have any real impact. All round, very disappointing. I really, really hope we have at least one decent, experienced, midfielder coming in and a striker/goal poacher.”

More views from the Match Thread:

Luke Imp: “Accrington came to us, from memory, having been terrible defensively and we managed to score one.

Go to Burton, with a stinking defensive record, and fail to score.

Cambridge come to us, with a stinking defensive record and fail to score (albeit with a couple of new defenders and McGrandles, I think).

FGR have turned out to be stinking defensively all season and we only managed one goal against them…”

imps_joe: “May as well copy my half-time report. Today was a match between two poor teams.

Another tough and unbelievably frustrating half (match)…. As expected.

Neither team look like scoring, though I would say Cambridge look ever so slightly more dangerous when they have the ball, we don’t look like creating anything.

The tactics are perplexing. We’re playing long balls all the time and winning zero headers. Our wingers don’t want to head the ball and there is no support close to House on the rare times he’s won a header. They are dominating us in the air.
Perhaps the plan is to win territory up the pitch, but our throw-in game is utterly atrocious.

We look best when we have the ball at feet down the wings (admittedly Diamond has had a bad game). Unfortunately, that’s not happened enough and the off the ball movement is non-existent. Bishop has had some nice touches, let’s get the ball on the ground and play to our player’s strengths. In general, the game passed the midfield by.

To add to this, on the upside it was another good defensive performance and clean sheet (though Cambridge’s lack of offensive talent may contribute to that).

The player’s body language and lack of intent and urgency was concerning. If we’re not going to go at second bottom from home, who will we go for?

It was by far and away the worst league atmosphere at the bank since the Cowleys took charge (bar the few moments from the Cambridge fans who travelled in excellent numbers). Most the game you could hear the chatter of a fan based not fully engaged in the match. The ironic cheers during the head tennis in the 2nd half and the boos at full-time point towards a potential turning point for MK, and not a good one.

Today was another poor, lacklustre match with negligible entertainment. Unfortunately something we are becoming accustomed to. A few more games like that and the finger really will start pointing towards MK.

Against my better judgment, I’ve got my ticket for Accrington. Surely it can’t be as bad as our previous two bouts with them?”

Chesterimp: “A couple of observations from the GBM Stand today.

While in block 2 the noise from 617 doesn’t always carry the length of the stand that well, most of the noise today seemed to be coming from the away end. The home atmosphere flatter than the team’s performance.

We went long, murmurs of discontent as possession was lost. Had a phase of passing and possession, patiently looking to work an opening. Murmurs of impatience and shouts of ‘get it forward’. I hope the murmurers were different each time!”

Thank you to Graham Burrell and Lincoln City Football Club for the photograph!
