Following Saturday’s 1-0 win away at Ipswich Town in League One, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what three things they learnt from the match.

You can discuss what has been said in this article HERE, as well as get involved with many other threads on our 100% Imps forum!

Here’s what Chimpimp said:

I don’t think we learned too much that we didn’t already know. Was anyone shocked that an expensively assembled team with a great home record, near the top spot, dominated possession against a team playing 5 at the back?

Was anyone who watched Lincoln’s last 2 games surprised that that back 5 would make Lincoln hard to break down?

Is anyone surprised anymore that Sean Roughan looks well on the way to being a class act at left-back? Defensively sound and able to play balls down the line which on a couple of occasions were sublime.

Is anyone surprised that 3 similar performances against Bolton, Charlton and Ipswich brought 3 different results and 3 different general reactions?

So it’s just a few small but perhaps significant things we may have learned…

and for me they were

1. I learned from just a couple of contributions from Mandriou that he should be a real player, as we are told he may be. You probably couldn’t think of more unlikely games for him to prosper than the three he has now been involved in and it could be while before we work out how to get the best out of him but I reckon it’s only a matter of time.

2. I learned that Freddie Draper is fit enough to be part of the match day squad, which must be a good thing for Lincoln, if only because he can resume his progress, which looked to be coming along nicely last season.

3. I also learned that the “time out” is still a Lincoln speciality even though the Cowleys are long gone from this parish. On 65 minutes with an Ipswich goal seeming inevitable, Rushworth needed treatment that allowed our “Rookie” head coach time to reset the team and the flow of the game to thankfully be disturbed. I knew MK is no rookie a good while ago but using an old trick used by many including our former manager, may give some less convinced, a bit of confidence, he knows what he’s up to.

We needed all the good play, good tactics, good organisation and a few bits of skulduggery we could find to win at Ipswich.

If we carry on like this, we could all learn Lincoln are a decent EFL1 side.

Thank you to Graham Burrell and Lincoln City Football Club for the photograph!
