1. Which competition is Danny Cowley’s odd one out?

a) FA Cup
b) League Cup
c) EFL Trophy
d) FA Trophy

The League Cup. Danny is responsible for taking Lincoln the furthest they have been in their history in the other three:

FA Cup: Quarter-final 2016-17
EFL Trophy: Won 2017-18
FA Trophy: Semi-final 2016-17

2. Which current Imp has a Finnish mother?

a) Alex Bradley
b) Jorge Grant
c) Joe Morrell
d) Anthony Scully

Alex Bradley, who has appeared for Finland at U15, U17 and U19 levels. He played in the 2018 European U19 Championship, which was actually held in Finland.

3. What cost in 3d in 1960, 9d in 1970, and 20p in 1980?

a) A Lincoln City silk scarf
b) Admission to the Railway End
c) The match programme
d) A golden goal ticket

The match programme, which was little more than a team sheet in 1960 and more akin to the modern version by 1980. That price of 20p in 1980 is the equivalent of 90p today, but the price of a programme in 2020 has outstripped inflation at £3. More pages and more colour account for much of that increase, yet clubs are now questioning the need for them at all. Enjoy them while you can.

4. Who was the first international footballer to have been appointed Lincoln City manager?

a) David Calderhead Snr
b) Allan Clarke
c) Con Moulson
d) David Herd

David Calderhead Snr, who made just the one appearance for Scotland, in a 7-0 win over Ireland in the British Home Championship on 9 March 1889. Although winning the FA Cup and the Second Division title as a player with Notts County, the Scottish selection committee of the time preferred not to select players who did not play in Scotland. He was appointed Lincoln’s secretary-manager in September 1900 and also made a couple of appearances for the club when injuries so demanded.

Moulson was appointed manager in January 1965 in succession to Bill Anderson, and had won 5 caps for Ireland, the first two of which came while still a Lincoln City player in May 1936. Herd surprisingly won just 5 caps for Scotland between 1958 and 1961, and was appointed manager in March 1971. Clarke won his 19 caps for England between 1970 and 1975, and was appointed City manager in June 1990.

5. What was unusual about City’s Christmas 1940 double-header against Doncaster Rovers?

a) Both matches were played at Doncaster
b) Both matches were played at Lincoln
c) Both matches were abandoned due to the weather
d) Both matches were played on the same day

Both matches were played on the same day, 25 December. The first match kicked off at Belle Vue at 11am or 11.15am according to source, and finished in a 0-0 draw in front of 2,822. The teams immediately headed to Sincil Bank for a 3pm or 3.15pm kick-off, which saw City run out 3-1 winners in front of a slightly larger crowd of 2,855.

6. Which England legend appeared at Sincil Bank in January 1958?

a) Nat Lofthouse
b) Stanley Matthews
c) Billy Wright
d) Bobby Charlton

England captain Billy Wright skippered his all-conquering Wolves team in an FA Cup third round tie on 4 January 1958. Despite being rooted to the bottom of the Second Division, City put up a battling performance against a Wolves side already six points clear on their way to the First Division title. Six months later, Wright would captain England at the World Cup Finals in Sweden, the third successive time he had captained England at the event. He was one of four England internationals to play for Wolves that day, yet his free-scoring side only just scrambled through with a goal from Jimmy Mullen, who had himself appeared in the World Cup Finals in 1950 and 1954. This was a very illustrious team – small wonder that the attendance of 21,741 remains one of the ten highest in the club’s history.

At the time he appeared at Sincil Bank, Wright had 88 caps to his name. Little over a year later, he became the first player in the world to win 100 caps when he played in a 1-0 win over Scotland at Wembley on 11 April 1959. He won his 105th and final cap six weeks later.

7. In addition to being Lincoln’s record signing, what other record was held by striker Paul Smith when he signed for Lincoln on 4 September 1987?

a) Lincoln’s record signing
b) The most expensive non-league player ever
c) Port Vale’s record sale
d) Port Vale’s record scorer in a season

At £48,000, Smith was the most expensive non-league player ever, and attracted a lot of flak because of it. I recall a Runcorn fan giving him dog’s abuse at Canal Street shortly after he signed for us; thirty seconds later, Smith scored. Unfortunately, we went on to lose 4-1, but that is because Nigel Batch could not see the ball under Runcorn’s feeble floodlights once darkness fell.

Smith proved excellent value for money, scoring 40 goals in 306 appearances for the Imps in addition to helping the club back to the FL at the first attempt. Only 14 players have played more games for the club, and his apparently mediocre scoring record was due to converting to a defender after a couple of seasons.

8. Who was Lincoln City chairman when they won the Fourth Division title in 1975-76?

a) Dennis Bocock
b) Dennis Houlston
c) Reg Brealey
d) Heneage Dove

All four were heavily involved with Lincoln City throughout the 1970s. Dove had originally been chairman for a year from 1970 before handing over to car dealer Charles Warner in June 1971. Warner then handed over to Dennis Bocock a year later for two seasons before stepping up for a second spell in April 1974. Dove then took over from Warner in August 1975 just as the season got under way, and remained in the position until December 1980 when he was replaced by Dennis Houlston.

The board of directors in 1975-76 was: Heneage Dove (Chairman), Reg Brealey (Vice-Chairman), Gilbert Blades, Alan Davey, Dennis Houlston and Harold Sills. Bocock was Honorary Life President by then.

9. Who was the only player to score in four successive league games during the 2018-19 championship season?

a) Bruno Andrade
b) John Akinde
c) Shay McCartan
d) Harry Anderson

Andrade returned from a poor run of form to score against Notts County, Northampton, Stevenage (2) and Morecambe (2) in February. The only other player to score during February was John Akinde, in the 96th minute of the final match of the month (against Exeter at SB).

10. Which of the four main stands at Sincil Bank was the last to be built?

a) The Co-op Stand (Sincil Bank)
b) The Selenity Stand (St Andrews)
c) The Stacey West Stand (Railway End)
d) The Bridge McFarland Stand (South Park End)

The Co-op Stand, which was opened in March 1995 under the name of its original sponsors Linpave.

The Selenity Stand was the first to be redeveloped, under its traditional name of the St Andrews Stand. The original wooden stand was condemned after the Bradford fire and demolished in 1986; its replacement was first used for the FA Cup first round match against Crewe Alexandra on 14 November 1987.

The Stacey West Stand replaced the crumbling Railway End terrace in 1990, while the Bridge McFarland replaced the remains of the old wooden South Park Stand in 1992.
