DC: “I think it spices it up a little.”

It was an unusually short press conference by Danny Cowley standards ahead of the Yeovil Town game with him seemingly in a very relaxed mood, delivering a light touch to topics as diverse as International Book Day and the arrival of baby O’Connor. In between, he even managed to fit in a bit of chat about football.

Forest Green: DC was proud of the performance, especially the ability of the players to apply the game plan so effectively which had included in-game tactical changes throughout. It is not easy to do so and the ability to change is a real feature of this crop of players; a testament to their adaptability.

Yeovil: They play differently to FGR so there will be changes again – DC has been working on a game plan all week. Yeovil had an excellent start to the season but had key players injured. However, those players are now back (30 strong squad) so there is real competition for all places and it comes as no surprise that recent results have picked up with them having won their last two matches. Yeovil will typically counter-attack and have a physical presence. The aforementioned adaptability of Imps players will be called upon again. City have had more home draws than DC would have ideally liked but ‘ours’ is still a proud record with just the one defeat. It is up to Lincoln to be good enough to defeat teams that set up defensively.

Friday Night Football: DC didn’t have a definitive answer as to why this game, in particular, had been selected but specifically stated he does like one Friday game a season as it ‘spices it up’. He explained that in the event of a positive result it would allow the Imps to get ahead of their rivals. The training schedule has been adapted with there being no matches for the next two Saturdays. The players will be in for training over both weekends and that is just a sacrifice they will have to make in order to be successful.

Player Availability: DC was delighted for The O’Connor family following the arrival of their baby. He was particularly pleased that Mrs O’Connor had diligently followed team instructions to give birth in the early part of the week. Michael O’Connor will be available as will Danny Rowe who had been ‘out’ last week with a slight quadricep strain.

Insight into the Importance of Re-starts: DC explained that statistically, Imps games average 90 per match. The season target is to score 25 goals from all types i.e. free kicks, corners, penalties, throw-ins. That is why so much training emphasis is put on the quality of delivery and timing of runs into the box. DC calls the little bit extra above and beyond that the expectation from the players ‘to put their head in front of a bus’.
