“Bolger’s absence will mean Michael Appleton will have to pull some sort of rabbit out of the hat.”

Ahead of tomorrow night’s match away at Portsmouth in Sky Bet League One, we asked our members what three things they think The Imps need to do to pick up all three points.

Here’s what Chimpimp said:

1. Find a defensive system that will work with the players available. Bolger’s absence will mean Michael Appleton will have to pull some sort of rabbit out of the hat. We only have two young players with experience of playing centre back available. They played together in a squad match last week and conceded 4 goals. Defending however is a team effort and as goal-shy Portsmouth have only found the net 12 times in the league, a clean sheet may not be beyond Lincoln.

2. Improve our set pieces. Jorge Grant and Jack Payne are reputed to provide excellent set-piece delivery. Anyone watching the last few games would be asking why Neal Eardley has relinquished these duties. A resounding answer would go along way to three points.

3. Avoid the ex-player curse. A certain Sean Raggett is in Portsmouth’s defence this season. We know he’s a big threat from corners, so let’s make sure our memories of him rising to head in the winner are reserved for matches involving Forest Green and Burnley.

And here’s what Jamesimp said:

1. As we did Friday be resolute in defence from minute 1. We’re going to have a new centre back pairing which has to hit the ground running, no silly 5 yard passes into a midfielder with a player up his backside or long wayward punts which immediately give the ball back to the opposition.

2. The hole player needs to get up with Tyler Walker and support him, again if he’s got no-one to pass to the ball will just be swept up and we start on the defensive again.

3. Friday saw a once again passing the ball square or backwards far too often, all that happens is you give the opposition more time to organise and press us into a mistake. If we are playing wingers, release it down the channels and let them run at the wing-backs.
