“We have become a well-drilled defensive outfit.”

|

Following Friday night’s 0-0 draw at home against Shrewsbury Town, we asked our members what three things they learned from the match.

Here’s what sedgleyimp said:

1. We have become a well-drilled defensive outfit. Even being down to 10 in the last 12-15 minutes it was clear that the players were still able to manage the threat from Shrewsbury and restrict them to shots from distance. The banks of four in front of the goalkeeper were maintained irrespective of the players actually operating in the positions.

2. Teams will set up to frustrate us in our home games. It was pretty clear from last night that Shrewsbury came for a point. It was only when we went down to 10 players that they became a little bit more adventurous. Our creative players were closed down and marked out of the game. Bruno Andrade had two players on him constantly. We are going into a run of games against teams who will try and nullify the threats of our ball-playing players by snuffing them out of the game and we need to find other ways of getting them on the ball.

3. There has been some criticism of some of the performances of Josh Vickers this season but last night showed that we have a very good League One standard keeper. All goalkeepers will make errors and the nature of that position is that such errors often lead to goals against. Last night Josh earned us the point with some very good late saves. He will earn us more points this season than he loses for us.
