Following last night’s 2-2 draw away at Barrow AFC in the Second Round of the League Cup, in which The Imps won 3-1 on penalties, I asked the Vital Lincoln City members what three things they learnt from the match.

Here’s what sedgleyimp said:

1. You can’t overestimate the way that players’ confidence can be affected by one result. Up to the Peterborough defeat, the defence had been rock solid all season. Yet last night the whole defence showed signs of nervousness and mistakes were made which very nearly cost us the game. It is perhaps only natural following a heavy defeat that players are a little bit more hesitant in how they play the game. Hopefully, the penalty shoot-out win will instill that bit of extra confidence in the players to take the season forward.

2. There is a resilience in this team. Let’s be honest if we had gone 2-1 down late on in a game last season we wouldn’t have scored such a later equaliser. When Barrow scored I thought back to the cup game against Hartlepool last December where we conceded with the best part of half an hour to go, yet at no point did I think that we were ever going to get back into that game. Last night showed a different team. One which thinks it can get back into a match despite a late concession. Having players who can change the game from the bench is important in those circumstances and we had those last night in Hopper and Garrick.

3. This was a better result than many are giving credit for. An away trip to Barrow is never easy. They are a much-improved team and I think it has been mentioned that in the league table pyramid they are actually only 9 places behind us. You only have to look at some of the other results in the Cup last night to know that an away draw at a team in a league below you can so often result in a defeat. We got through, perhaps with a bit of good fortune here and there, but ultimately we will all be looking for the draw this evening hoping for that home game against one of the big boys whilst expecting the away trip to Morecambe to come out. A good place to be.
