“Akinde and Rowe are the partnership we’ve been looking for.”

|

Following Saturday’s 3-3 draw away at Bury in Sky Bet League Two, we asked our members what three things they learned from the match.

Here’s what elkimp said:

1. Akinde and Rowe are the partnership we’ve been looking for. Big John has been admonished a bit this season. Mostly undeserving as he tirelessly runs the line on his own, often occupying a couple of defenders most of the time. And trying to hold up play waiting for support. No one so far in the 10 role has really shone and linked up well with John, until now. Rowe, an intelligent, fast in thought and feet, seems to know where John is and how to play with him and off him. Whereas McCartan and John played separate games, and Pett did his defensive duties too much, and Rheady did his usual 10 role, Rowe will maximise Akinde and we’ll see the best of both.

2. Vickers is definitely a safer pair of hands. This is harsh on Smith who has been solid enough in games when he has not really been under pressure, but against Bury, he could have saved all three. First one needed to react quicker; the second goal should have sensed to get down to parry an OK shot, and the third should have had a stronger hand. Vickers would have saved at least one of those. But you are only the better keeper if you can get on the pitch fit.

3. The media and particularly Sky Sports continue to miss the point of how a Danny Cowley team plays. And long may that continue, because as this nonsense grows that we are more direct than most and rely on a big centre forward to bang it up to, we will keep on winning by producing proper lower league football, of skill, strength, commitment, unity, passion, will and sheer determination to win. Now and again this includes damn good football, but nearly always includes a team performance that any fan base would want.
