They both work for Manchester City, Sertori as a massage therapist and Felgate as goalkeeping coach to the Academy and U21s.

1. What is unusual about City’s two goalkeepers from the 1987-88 Conference championship season?

Neither Nigel Batch nor Richard Wilson ever played a League match for City. Wilson left for Eastwood Town in the close season whilst Batch joined Darlington after City signed the experienced Mark Wallington from Derby.

2. Which City legend described Gordon Hobson’s chip at Chesterfield on 6 November 1982 as the best goal he had ever seen?

Gordon Hobson. Hobbo had lots of great qualities, but modesty evidently wasn’t one of them.

3. Why did City’s FA Cup First Round tie against Gateshead at Sincil Bank 22 November 1980 come as something of a surprise?

City were drawn at home to Marine, who had beaten Gateshead 1-0 in their Fourth Qualifying Round tie three weeks earlier. However, Gateshead protested that Marine had fielded an ineligible player and were reinstated. City won a turgid match 1-0 with a rare Phil Turner goal.

4. Which City star ironically listed ‘staying in hotels and long journeys’ as his dislikes in a 1984 interview?

Phil Neale, who ironically has been the England cricket team’s tour manager for many years.

5. Which member of City’s 1986-87 relegation team was rumoured to be joining League Champions Everton?

Lee Butler, who was eventually signed by Aston Villa’s new manager Graham Taylor for a non-league record of £100,000. Villa had just been relegated from the First Division only 5 years after winning the European Cup, but Taylor took them back up at the first attempt and led them to 2nd place in 1990, earning himself the England job in the process. And Butler’s contribution to this success? Just 8 matches in 4 years.

6. How did Barry Clements regularly cover every blade of grass on the Sincil Bank pitch without making a single first team appearance for the club?

Barry was the club’s groundsman between 1979 and 1986.

7. Who was appointed Assistant Manager 15 years after losing his job as Manager?

Bert Loxley, who was appointed Assistant Manager to George Kerr on 1st August 1986. He was made redundant following City’s relegation from the League at the end of that season, shabby treatment for one of Lincoln’s all-time greats.

8. Which City legend made his final appearance for the club at Swindon on 24 April 1982?

John Ward, who appeared as an emergency striker following injuries to Gordon Hobson and Derek Bell. The 1-0 defeat to relegation-bound Swindon was a major setback to City’s promotion ambitions and the still-unfit Bell was rushed back for the following match against Bristol Rovers. It was the final game of Ward’s career.

9. Besides Lincoln City and Bury, what do former Imps Mark Sertori and David Felgate have in common?

They both work for Manchester City, Sertori as a massage therapist and Felgate as goalkeeping coach to the Academy and U21s.

Sertori is also part of the England backroom staff.

10. Name the player and the venue:

Gordon Simmonite at Kidderminster, taken on 12 March 1988. City drew 3-3 despite having captain Trevor Matthewson sent off.
