1. Other than in Lincoln’s first team, where might you have seen Terry Cooper, Peter Grotier, John Ward, Ian Branfoot and Sam Ellis in 1976?

In the PFA Division 4 team.

2. What connection is there between a manager, a player, and a thief?

You all got very close. The missing piece was the identity of the player: a member of our 87-88 championship side (father, brother, son).

3. How did you know if you had the lucky programme in 1981-82?

It contained Colin Murphy’s autograph.

4. Which City striker scored 138 goals for Everton?

Bob Latchford, who scored his 138 from 286 games. He is third in their all-time goalscorer list behind Dixie Dean (an incredible 383 from 433 games) and Graeme Sharp (159 in 426).

5. Where would you have found Barrie Horton in the 1970s and 1980s?

In the souvenir/programme shop, which he helped to run.

6. Which big club reneged on a promise to bring a team to Lincoln for a friendly in 1982-83?

Newcastle United, who agreed to the match in part settlement of the outstanding transfer fee for Mick Harford. They never came.

7. What did City do in 1967 that they hadn’t done for 56 years

Finish bottom of the Football League.

8. Which legendary manager played in City’s 11-1 win over Crewe Alexandra at Sincil Bank on 29 September 1951?

Crewe wing-half Tony Waddington, who was in the final stages of his playing career and was soon to join Stoke City as a coach (which he did in 1952). Waddington is considered Stoke’s best ever manager, having saved them from relegation to the Third Division in 1961, won the Second Division championship in 1963 and the League Cup in 1972. He transformed the fortunes of the club, signing Stanley Matthews, George Eastham, Gordon Banks, Alan Hudson, Geoff Hurst and Peter Shilton amongst many others and putting 15,000 on the gate in the 1960s.

Another low point in his career also came at Sincil Bank, as his side were knocked out of the League Cup by Graham Taylor’s Imps on 10 September 1975 (the night the wall came down). Waddington left Stoke in 1977 and had a short spell managing Crewe before retiring. He died in January 1994.

9. Derek Bell hit the bar on 18 December 1982; why was that significant?

It came just after half time in the match with Bournemouth at Sincil Bank, with the score at 2-0. Had Bell scored, City would have had double figures; as it happened, they had to settle for a 9-0 win. 10-0 would have equalled the club’s biggest ever winning margin in a League match.

10. Name the player and the venue:

Goalkeeper Richard Wilson at Macclesfield, taken on 12 April 1988. Wilson, who was the nephew of Arsenal legend Bob Wilson, joined City from Grantham on non-contract terms as cover for the injured Nigel Batch. City lost the game 2-0, one of the goals scored by current Macclesfield manager Jon Askey.
