FROM www.crowdfunder.co.uk/dambusters:

AIM:

Our aim is to transform the main stand of our stadium to create a mosaic which features the iconic Avro Lancaster Bomber and the historic Lincoln Cathedral, celebrating and commemorating the rich heritage of the Royal Air Force and it’s association with our city and our county.

PROJECT:

Lincoln & Lincolnshire is steeped in heritage. It is home to one of the few remaining copies (and probably the best copy) of the Magna Carta; it is home to the Royal Air Force Red Arrows aerobatic display team; it is the home of the iconic Dambusters; and it is home to one of the most beautiful Cathedrals in the world. Lincoln City Football Club is an integral part of this proud heritage and has been since 1884.

The Football Club has launched this crowd funding scheme to celebrate this proud heritage, which will see the replacement of the seats in its largest stand to create a mosaic which features the Avro Lancaster Bomber and Lincoln Cathedral; two of the most iconic images associated with the city and the county. The Avro Lancaster was probably the most famous aircraft flown by the 617 Dambusters squadron of the Royal Air Force in WW2.

By making a pledge to support this campaign, you will be helping to create something unique and iconic that celebrates the proud heritage of the Royal Air Force; the city of Lincoln; the county of Lincolnshire; and the nation, as well as helping to secure the future of Lincoln City Football Club. Your generous donation will mean that you will get to own your very own piece of this historic mosaic, for which you will receive an eye catching certificate (detailing which part of the mosaic is yours) which you can then display with pride. You will also receive other commemorative gifts as a thank you for your support.

PLEDGES:

If the project is fully pledged it will raise approximately £380,000 of which around £150,000 will be invested in creating the mosaic. The rest will be invested in guaranteeing the Club for future generations. The Club owns its own stadium which includes the stand that will host the mosaic.

The mosaic is made up of 5,681 individual pieces and each piece is available for purchase with prices starting as low as £40, rising to a maximum of £250. Once the funding target is achieved, an interative digital plan of the stand will be unveiled and you will be able to go on-line and choose exactly which pieces of the mosaic you wish to own, as per the reward you have chosen for your pledge. If you would like to support this project but you don’t wish to buy a piece of the mosaic then you can pledge £5 and add your name to a roll of honour which will be displayed on the stand. Every pledge received will help to make this project become a reality.

INSPIRATION:

The plane featured in the mosaic was painted by Lincolnshire-based artist Simon Atack, who has helped the Club create the design.

The image of the Lancaster is taken from Simon’s painting Hopgood’s Courageous Run, regarded by experts as the most authentic portrayal of a 617 Sqn. Lancaster in action, so far painted.

The original full painting portrays the attack on the Mohne Dam by 21-year-old Flt Lt John Vere ‘Hoppy’ Hopgood in his plane nicknamed Mother. The story of Hopgood and his crew’s remarkable bravery embodies the spirit of the Dambusters. Hopgood was severely wounded in the head and most of his crew suffered terrible wounds when the aircraft was hit by flak over Holland, an hour before they even reached the dam. The Lancaster was also crippled with both her portside engines damaged.

Simon who lives near RAF Coningsby, sells his original works for around £10,000 and has sold six of his paintings to Oscar winning film director Peter Jackson. His work is also on display in galleries and museums around the world. He has donated his work to the Imps for free.

We’re trying to raise more money for the Football Club.

So, if you have any old Programmes/Shirts/Balls etc (Signed or not) that you’d like to donate for us to Auction on eBay, please contact lincoln@vitalfootball.co.uk.
