Vic’s Case 4 The Defence 2009/10

To fashion Football League 2`s meanest rearguard we have enrolled the cream of Spurs, Sheffield Wednesday, Man Utd, Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace and Budapest – oh all right then Chesterfield.

And believe me if this lot worked in catering they would have a fork in every sugar bowl, and smile at the punters whilst peeling oranges in their pockets. Thank you Jacko for one of the best defensive units in Impish history. Honestly it looks so good on paper it could have been written by a monk.

Readers please feel free to copy, paste and keep our guide or simply check out the squad section on the main menu for updates throughout the season.

1 Rob Burch

League 2`s best keeper no messing. After learning the hard way in his first season as a League number one, Rob will return more clean sheets this term than an anorexic on a diet. Big strong brave and hopefully planning to throw the ball out more this season.

2 Paul Green

A return in November after a successful operation is great news for Imp fans who see him as a huge part of the Imps defensive unit. The former player of the year was not at his best last year due to him having to play with an injury. Green has guts and an X rated tackle that even Janos can and can`t relate to. Paul is also the only thing John Deehan got right bar getting his coat.

3 Aaron Brown
Aaron is not to be wasted in defence as he can provide more assists than a midwife at Lincoln general. However he has proved that if our other two left backs fail he is more than up to the job.

4 Janos Kovaks

FE FI FO FUM! Janos is the Giant of Impdom.

This is Arnold Schwarzenegger in his prime in a football kit. Even a convoy of tanks driven by Barry Fry and the telly tubbies couldn`t knock him off the ball. A physique and a forehead that would head cannon balls back across a battlefield and shoulder barge a rhino. The Giant of the Imps is simply awesome and at 3 p.m on Saturday he`ll be back.

5 Moses Swaibu

Moses Swaibu 19, is 6` 2′ and like a whippet with muscle. His pace makes him a useful though raw defender who loses few one-on-ones. Has he lost it? Yep, nope, yep – wait here comes the Hallelulia moment as one stride later that telescopic saving tackle saves the day. Then that brilliant grin to the Stacey West says it all – Gotcha! You know the one, the sort of precision that could pluck a harp from 10 yards, right on the penalty spot and get away with it. Quality player, smashing lad and ours for another two years. Who says that Eagles have good sight?

6 Daniel Hone

Thou shallt not pass is clearly Danny`s motto. Darlo tried to stamp him out but couldn`t in one of his many bruising battles last year. His positional sense is superb, although as the tallest Imp at 6 foot five he has a good view of things. With another season under his belt Dany Hone will be worth his weight in gold. His timing in the tackle is second to none and with several scouts on his tail lets enjoy him while we can.

16 Joe Heath

The best left back in the bottom two divisions and one of Forests future greats. His initial 6-month loan should be extended to 12 bar injuries at Forest. Has pace, strength and gets up and down the flank with a skill way beyond his years. As for marking, the way shadows his man would get him at least 6 months for stalking in any other walk of life. Quality, quality player.

25 Cyan Hughton

Cian has an infectious style of play and links particularly well with Jamie Clarke. His best games have come when they play together and his pace and hunger has ensured they get into and overpower opposing left midfielders, and then ultimately the full backs. His pace has got him out of jail a few times but then that is to be expected for one so young. By far the most eye-catching side of his game is his pace and those silky skills on the overlap combined with crossing that really impresses both fans and coaching staff alike. .

28 Kern Miller

Another product of the fountain of youth and the first to come through from the Imps Grassroots centres, Kern will get his chances this year. Has so far made only a 7-minute appearance as a substitute.

29 – Luca Coleman-Carr

A really exciting capture from Yeovil, Luca has a song to match his lively exuberant style. His lightening speed and killer cross shows we have strength in depth should Heath get a ban or injury.
